fly shops closed

In the last year two fly shops in Silicon Valley have closed. Anyone
else seeing shops shut down? Will we finally see those fire sales of
bamboo rods on eBay?

Three reasons I can think of:

1. Internet commerce.

2. Cabelas, Bass Pro, etc.

3. No decent fly fishing anywhere near Silicon Valley, at least that I
know of.

Every fly shop I've been to in Silicon Valley has been a yuppie haven
for A River Runs Through It aficionados. They sell more in clothing and
designer umbrella stands and hand carved walking sticks than they do fly
fishing gear.

When I'm in the SF Bay Area and I need fly fishing stuff I go to:

We're losing them here in the Northeast. A few in southern and central
NH have closed recently, and a well known shop on the Farmington River
will be closing later this year. The closest shop to me is about 25
miles, and the owner is an asshole, so I do most of my shopping online
or at shows.

Is it just me or does anyone else find it somewhat telling that Silicon Valley
can't (won't?) support brick-n-mortar stores...or that folks think B-n-M are a
good business venture in such a place? I'll take RW's word that they are
ARRTI-inspired and stocked, but even so...

streams. I do just hope it's mostly the assholes who are losing their

it's not just the assholes...sadly. but, without people who love the
streams, we'll lose them for sure. less people can be found...but we
need more people to love our streams and what's in them. a conundrum.

Believe me, I walk the appropriate walk, wherever I am, and I do realize
that it's selfish, but I'd be happier with fewer folks flyfishing. Like,
I hope there are 2 or 3 mystical beautiful golf movies for every
flyfishing movie in the next few years.

We have lived in a remarkable age... We have seen the demise of the cowboy
while the prairies were abundant.

The fields we hunted in, the lakes and ponds we swan in are now paved over
shopping malls.

We see the parks we used to take for granted now taking reservations all
summer long.

The poor keep ****in', the immigrants keep ****in' and comin' and no one
talks about sustainable life for our planet. Oh maybe sustainable if you
like Soylent Green...

We are the last of our kind, no wires plugged into our head, no micro-chips
in our sold reporting to 'Clave Central" or Carnivore if you will.....

What was it Red Cloud sad? Something like, 'The white men have won. But as
long as I have a spear and horse I'm going to live like an Indian?"

......okay..RDean, pull me out of the titty bar in the Quarter and let me
have another beer....
