Frank Reid Well, you might have to wait a while. The controversy over whether extinct species can be resurrected with modern molecular biology techniques has been raging for years and gets hotter with every new advance. Personally, I'm convinced that there are people alive today who will see it happen.....not you or me (probably.....unless we get ourselves cloned, pre- or post- mortem).....but it's going to happen. There are enough fresh enough dodo specimens around that the genome will be easy enough to piece together with the technology that will surely be available in a decade or two, perhaps even sooner. An extinct ibex was recently resurrected by cloning, using tissue that was frozen for just such an eventuality, Obviously MUCH fresher than any dodo.....but the technology improves at a phenomenal rate. Wolfgang kirtland's warbler, on the other hand.....well, get 'em while their ho....er, still warm. ![]() |

Get a couple of specimens.....map the genome.....captive breeding.....release into the wild.....save the culls for, um, "research".....count the money, and Bob's yer uncle, buy all the flies you'll ever want. ![]() Wolfgang who cannot believe there is but one way to skin a bird. |
