JT I guess I'm not getting my order of dodo flies. Frank Reid Well, you might have to wait a while. The controversy over whether extinct species can be resurrected with modern molecular biology techniques has been raging for years and gets hotter with every new advance. *Personally, I'm convinced that there are people alive today who will see it happen.....not you or me (probably.....unless we get ourselves cloned, pre- or post- mortem).....but it's going to happen. *There are enough fresh enough dodo specimens around that the genome will be easy enough to piece together with the technology that will surely be available in a decade or two, perhaps even sooner. *An extinct ibex was recently resurrected by cloning, using tissue that was frozen for just such an eventuality, *Obviously MUCH fresher than any dodo.....but the technology improves at a phenomenal rate. Wolfgang kirtland's warbler, on the other hand.....well, get 'em while their ho....er, still warm. * * ![]() I'm thinking the Ne Ne would be a good candidate. Not extinct, but needs some diversity from the skins in assorted collections around the world. Frank Reid |

Get a couple of specimens.....map the genome.....captive breeding.....release into the wild.....save the culls for, um, "research".....count the money, and Bob's yer uncle, buy all the flies you'll ever want. ![]() Wolfgang who cannot believe there is but one way to skin a bird. |
