And as a kid we could always tell new kids who were from "Sow Jerrsiee" and cruelly called them "Rebels." But now Jersey-speak is more likely to be pronounced with an accent honed in Bangalore, Hyderabad or sumsuch, and Sari shops are not hard to find. (IMHO That HBO show set in prohibition Atlantic City gets lots of the nuance right, even the NYC and Philly stuff.) On US#1 near Rahway, one night last summer, seeking directions, 3 stops for same at gas stations drew NO, ZERO, NADA speakers of English, or Spanish (Puerto Rican, Castillano, or Mexican), or rough French, or rough Cheska, platoon leader or any other recognizable patois.
