From TU Flathead Chapter
: Good Afternoon TU members and friends, The Montana House of Representatives recently passed HB 309, a bill that would, if passed through the Montana legislature, limit access to many Montana rivers for not only those who fish, but also for everyday Montanans who recreate on these rivers. We have an opportunity to stop this bill! Next Thursday, March 3rd Montana TU will RALLY to oppose HB 309 at 2:00 p.m. at the Old Supreme Court Chambers in Helena’s State Capitol building. This bill describes many stream channels throughout the state as “ditches,” essentially privatizing many of the waters that are now public. The Montana House passed the bill, and the Senate Agriculture Committee is scheduled to hear public comments at 3:00 Thurs., March 3rd. We need a BIG TURNOUT, so please spread the word, join us at the Capitol next Thursday, and bring a friend! Watch for an Action Alert from Montana TU within the next 24 hours… If you can't make it, please contact as many Senators as possible before the committee meets next week. Again, HB-309 is scheduled for a hearing in the Senate, Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation committee next Thursday March 3. These guys need to hear from us if we want to continue to have access to fishing streams in Montana. The legislature’s online message form makes it simple to send a message to a legislator or to a committee. Please use it! Thanks for supporting continued public access to Montana's many rivers and streams! I think 2011 will turn out to be a historic year in those farther places, but Madison....I must assume you mean the teachers' union when you refer to anti-democratic institutions. Jon. |

Jon. care to explain this one, Jon? Because, I sort of like my teachers having some bargaining power. Just because the rest of the nation got gulled into going non-union, and then watching their wages stagnate and benefits get stolen so the folks at the top of the scale can enrich themselves, doesn't make the unions the bad guys for resisting the trend. What do public sector unions balance? The power of those governing, which in our representative democratic republic is approximately the power of the people. So public sector unions are anti-democratic. I agree that our society is in a sad state when it comes to private sector unions, it almost cries out for revolutionary thinking (and acting); yet public sector unions are really a symptom of an underlying disfunction. They should not be needed. And they can become too powerful. If anyone right now needs a public sector union it is not the teachers, it is the soldiers. Jon. |
