You're getting old Larry!
Willi

Larry, I've noted that as far as most product advertising stands, I'm no
longer in the preferred demographic group. Nor, I believe, are any of us
who are now middle-aged or older.

In spite of wherever this thread is going, one of my all time favorite
ads was an "image" ad St Croix ran a couple of years ago, the one with the
old beat up Plymouth with a rod leaning against it and a (presumably) young
trout bum in a sleeping bag lying in the dirt. It kind of had a Nike "just
fish" attitude.

Interesting to note, that the effect of the ad you mention, was strong
enough to make you think quite a lot about it! This too is manipulation.

yes, I've been aware that they "got me" at that level G

but I'm a grumpy old ass and, although I'm not saying I won't buy Scott, I
AM saying that the Carl's Jr "stick in your mind by being gross" ads HAVE
cost them my business They used to be my fast food chain of choice, based
on product ... but I haven't stopped at one in several years in invisible
protest against bringing yet more digusting material into my home via the
boobtube

thanks for the reply Mike and thanks for the heads up on the rod handle deal
.... I've finished all 7 rods I intend to modify ...

I think Greg made an excellent point ... there isn't enough difference
between products for companies to sell much but hype and image And
clearly, some image types will appeal to me, or to you, others not ... so
maybe the market gets divvied up, in the end, more by "how we see ourselves"
i.e. the image we hope to convey, than product traits.

Scott's ad will make me less likely to buy another Scott, but I see many
things in the FF world ( since the popularity explosion) that seem grossly
"anti-why Larry FFishes" This is likely because the number of "types" out
on our streams is far greater than 30 years ago, imho

I must admit that I also avoid businesses and products that try to "hard
sell" or "bull****", whether it be with advertisements or attitudes.

This was actually always my main bone of contention with Gehrke.

Be sure to let us know how you get on with the rods.

Got a digital camera?

How about posting a few pix. I'd like to see the results.

Since I don't type or read as fast as you guys, I thought I'd snip this
down to the essence. You've hit the nail on the head here. We all
knew it, buit it worked anyway. The real value of this ad is that in
the shop when we're looking at rods, we won't just push Scott aside as
some unknown, we'll give it consideration as we would Loomis or Sage or
T&T.

Yes, please, but put the info in a new thread so it doesn't get lost
here. Also, a scanner can probably get a good picture if you don't
have a camera. Just lay a blank piece of paper over the rod on the
platten.

I think it is smart advertising. The ads are geared toward new people in
the sport you have gotten bitten by the bug instead of us old farts that
have been around a long time. Think those newly bitten guys are going to
be spending more money on gear.

hehe, I'll consider that

I said bothered, not "disturbed" G and I am usually bothered by things I
don't understand, aren't you?

Hm......this suggests what may prove to be a theory of great explanatory
power. Being bothered by things one doesn't understand might be the basis
for building an uncannily faithful model of ROFF.
