eye hooks once and didn't like them because they came off at the
most inopportune time. Did the article mention any drawbacks to the
widening flat method?

It clearly wasn't as good as an eye, and you have to get the right taper so
the snell doesn't come off.

Use hook size will depend on the type of fish you are fishing. Things like the type of bait to use, fishing line, size, topography, and even you can ask for different types of fishing hooks and size.
