Penn's questions

Well,

the ticket is booked and paid for. With the connection flight it was US$
740.

Some questions:

What are the waters that we fish? Small creek(s)? Big river?
Any special flies that are a must?
Do I bring my own deck of cards or will you bring your marked ones? ;-)
Do I need to shop for food in advance or is there a place nearby that I can
get what I need?
Do you plan dinner in groups or each and everyone to himself?
Whats lobster night? An excuse to get drunk?
What will the climate be like?
Lou, is it OK if I accept your offer on a sleeping bag and mattress?
I have a four piece rod Sage 490-4LL, will that cover my needs or do I bring
a heavier classed rod?
What will we be fishing for? (Brown trout, rainbow trout, cutthroat or
what?)
Anyone wish to buy something from Sweden? Loop reel or anything like that?

You're flying a long ways and I think you deserve a more honest answer.
I don't live in Pennsylvania so I MIGHT be wrong, but I believe that May
is a rainy time of year. The year I went, it literally rained every day
and the rivers were muddy and very high. That was an exceptional amount
of rain. Last year was better. The likelihood of muddied rivers is what
makes the trip this year iffy for me.

Maybe Bill is in charge of weather this year and he's guaranteeing good
weather?

With the discussions of Penns weather that we've seen on ROFF, I didn't
think my post needed a smiley. :-)

Roger, plan on bringing everything from shorts to midweight long johns, from
sun hat to full on Gore Tex and you'll probably use most or all of it during
the week.

Willi is NOT wrong. Over the last 30 years, we've averaged about an
inch of rain a week at that time of year. Dave and I got caught in a
minor blizzard last year! But we also have lovely, warm, sunny days
in May.

I know I got a distorted perspective when I was there, but according to
the weather station at State College, May is the wettest month of the year.

True, that was exceptional. Not sure of the dates of the Clave that
year, but it rained 5.92 inches in May and 9.0 (!) inches in June.

May is NOT, I repeat, NOT a typically raining month in PA(April often is, though).

According to the data published daily in the CDT (local paper) by
AccuWeather, the 30-year average rainfall for the month of May is 3.70
inches.

Average for April, 3.16 inches. June, 4.28 inches.

Large standard deviations, of course.

As long as I'm looking stuff up, average high temps for the second
half of May rise from 69 to 73, F; average overnight lows, 48 to 53.

All those numbers are for State College, about 30 miles WSW of Coburn.
In this kind of mountainous terrain, both rainfall and temps can vary
a lot over relatively short distances.

vince - i think of those long ridges around penns and state college as
"hills", compared to western nc mountains. what is the highest elevation
in the area of penns and state college? isn't penns at coburn at about
900-1000 feet elevation?
