if it IS the cold affecting the batteries (and that certainly does happen),
next time try pulling the batteries out and holding them in your pocket for awhile. some camera manufacturers who offer a wide range of accessories for their cameras (i'm only familiar with the major brands which cater to pros/canon/nikon) offer battery packs which can be kept in pockets with a long cord leading to the camera's battery chamber for just this reason. i think minolta and pentax also offer a wide range of accessories which might include such a gizmo. but again, i'm only somewhat familiar with professional camera systems which use the traditional 35mm SLR body style with interchangeable lenses. eric fresno, ca. Sometimes the cold can make the batteries act as if they are drained, and then when warmed up they come back to life. Lithium batteries exhibit very little of that problem.
