I was parked on a major road that leads to ski resort and West
Yellowstone.

I *always* lock up my fishing gear
because items like that are useful and easy to get rid of around here

and then when warmed up they come back to life. Lithium batteries

if it IS the cold affecting the batteries (and that certainly does happen),
next time try pulling the batteries out and holding them in your pocket for
awhile. some camera manufacturers who offer a wide range of accessories for
their cameras (i'm only familiar with the major brands which cater to
pros/canon/nikon) offer battery packs which can be kept in pockets with a
long cord leading to the camera's battery chamber for just this reason. i
think minolta and pentax also offer a wide range of accessories which might
include such a gizmo. but again, i'm only somewhat familiar with
professional camera systems which use the traditional 35mm SLR body style
with interchangeable lenses.

If you have a different key for the ignition than for the door ( what I
think you said ) be SURE to get those little colored rings for the keys
....NOT so you can tell them apart, but mechanics, parking lot attendants,
shuttle service drivers etc etc will do their best to ruin both keys and
both tumblers unless you make it very easy for them to keep things straight
and provide specific instructions to be careful.

I speak from experience, I had to have the ignition lock replaced, thus
have different keys for it and doors, and until I started being VERY
specific in my instructions to others that would drive the truck, nearly
every time one key or the other would get bent and abused ... the "get a
bigger hammer" approach seems to occur to such people long before "try a
different key "

Yeah, it sucked for about an hour. When all was said and done and I was
driving back home, I just had to laugh about it though. Things like
that make fishing trips memorable.

Your fish are much more active than those on my local waters. I think
that's because of the flows you get. My home river has very low flows in
the Winter and although there has been some open water due to our
warmish Winter, the fish are holed up with only the occasional fish out
feeding. We usually need to start getting some increase in flows, even
small ones, before any of the fish start moving. That usually happens by
the end of the month. Then shortly after the BWO's start.

I haven't been fishing very much lately due to other obligations. I
think I just happened to get there at the right time. The fly shops had
been telling me that the fishing didn't start picking up until around
noon when the water was warmed up so I timed my outing for that time.
The fishing got tough and very slow at the end which could have been
because the water temps dropped. It did get pretty damn cold.

On the way back from work today I took some pics of the area. I can't
promise much in terms of quality since it was snowing a little and we
were moving, but here are a couple.

Well, it is winter so it wasn't hard to capture.... ;-) Our snowpack is
pretty good right now and more is currently being added. Bring it on!

And that was before it got cold.

Here it isn't really a matter of getting cold because the water flows
pretty fast. Call it a benefit of a fast moving freestone stream.
Slower rivers like the Yellowstone aren't as fortunate and some
stretches look much like the pics you put up.

is that the stretch of river south of bozeman on the way to west
yellowstone/henrys fork? i remember some big water by the road, though
i admit i was more concerned with and attentive to figuring out how to
turn off that acid rock cd you had left in your truck's jerry-rigged
