Hi
I'm thinking about popping over to America with the family. Fancy a bit of trout fishing and general "get away from it all". Quite like the idea of going off on horseback for a few days. I prefer river fishing on the smaller rivers, chalk stream and spate. Found this site which seems to be the sort of thing I've in mind http://www.utrail.com/index.html. Now my geography is bad but I do know that the USA is bigger than Britian. So any idea's on how to narrow it down? Books etc? Suppose a few days in Montanna is a "must do".Fire hole? Not into cities....OK yes if there are good tackle shops:-). Other thoughts..Gators, bears, swamps and lots of lovely land with not a town in sight. Any pointers on this rather broad question appreciated. B Bear |

I think you'd be better off just choosing a specific area and spending some time there (unless your trip will be a month or longer). A horseback trip somewhere in the Rockies is just what you're looking for. You'll see some beautiful country, lots of wildlife (no gators though) and some great fishing. Because of the altitude, snow lasts in the high country for quite awhile. Mid July through August would be a good time to go. There are lots of Dude Ranches that will set you up. Do a search on Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, Idaho and you'll get more info than you want. Willi |

My 16 yo grandson just about out-rode and out-fished me too. The optional fly-outs to the Middle Fork of the Salmon are a must. Some of the best dry fly fishing I've ever experience (outside of Maine). The accomodations are excellent and the food superb. They offer an overnight ride up to a remote lake. (The wrangler, btw, is absolutely beautiful, and yeah, that's a sexist remark!) Dave http://hometown.aol.com/davplac/myhomepage/index.html |
