On MOnday, Embry dam will be blown sky high and open the Rappahannock
River to migratory fish. In 5 to 10 years this should become the
premier shad fishery in the country with an explosion in smallmouth
and migratory striper fishing as well. Movements are also underway to
secure greater portions of the river from development.

That river name sounds very familiar ... does it flow near Warrenton Va?
..... if so that is the place my granddaddy took me to catch my first fish,
50+ years ago .... reading the name did a Dejevu (sp) thing to me, not sure
why

Heard mention of that today from one of my classmates.
The dam is in Fredericksburg, so it could be the same. If you think it is,
and you are feeling particularly nostalgic, there is a nice web-site you
should visit. It has info on the breaching of the dam, and events
accompanying it, as well as a very nice photo gallery, and other *stuff *.
It also has links to
related sites. It is called the Friends of the Rappahannock, and the
address is, http://for.communitypoint.org/embry.html.

The Rappahannock crosses Rt. 29 at Remington just south of Warrenton.
Excelent smallie fishing from here down. The big crowd expected today
may be disappointed as the Army engineers plan to blow out only the
bottom plate and lift the remainder out with cranes. What they will
probably see is something like a LaPlac size underwater fart and a
raft of dead fish floating downstream. No offense to the Pirate, just
something for comparison. There is a very nice deep pool just below
the dam that will be holding a lot of fish this time of year. In
about 5 years the real explosion will be the fish population. 10
pound smallmouth gorged on shad fingerlings; a resurgence of white
shad populations with hens going 7 pounds and fighting like tarpon.

Fredericksburg to Remington will be an exceptional fishery.

I just saw the video of the detonation on CNN. Kinda cool, but I'm glad I
didn't drive all thw way to Fredericksburg to see it. :-)

They had to blow it TWICE!! All those people turned out and Laplac makes a
bigger bubble in the water than the ZERO HOUR blast. An hour later, after
everyone left disappointed, the Army Engineers reprimed and the BIG ONE went
up. Go to the Free Lance-Star website for photos and a video.
Shame Asadi isn't down here, there has never been a kayak through that
section of river. It is likely canoes went through before the dam was built
but no kayaks.
