I managed to learn how to keep back and forward casts high
in situations such as you describe, even tho I can't cast for
beans. Other people here are a much better reference re how
to accomplish that: I suspect that my resulting stroke is
totally off the wall. But you can also help things by using
a longer rod.

Heh heh heh. I understood it both times :-)

I'm looking forward to seeing my cast improve. I find when I'm wading, I
have developed this terrible bad habit of letting my backcast slap the water
because it loads up the rod better. I know I shouldn't do it, but the result
is such a nice, well-loaded forward cast that its hard not to 'ease' into
it.
Then, across the river will be some guy with casts like laser beams, and I
get all jealous... Yeah, I'll work on it.

Meanwhile, I still prefer casting from a canoe over casting from a kayak.

Yeah, I've saved a few boat plan links. I'm actually not in the
market, but that commercial one is a very clean design, no ribs,
nothing to hang line up on, etc. Just an awesome looking little
boat. And I'm not yet sure I'd trust my own life to my own
woodworking skills :-)

Funny, how timely, The 0800 New Yankee workshop on HGTV yesterday and
today was Nahm building the "Clancy" small sailboat. I've no doubt I
have the skills to build it but his nice two 1/2 hour shows would
easily equate to two months of work for me, especially given it's
getting warm and time to fish.
