Frog's Fanny Subsitute.

Now would an auto body shop cab-o-sil ? Someone mentioned craft shops for
something also can't remember what it was though maybe i'll try a google search
for the part that alway scraps the ground

It's alittle messy, but not hard. I have mine in a large gallon sized
ziplock. I open the bag enough to dip the bottle in, fill it, remove it
from the bag, shake it to settle the stuff and repeat until full. That's
the best way I've found. The stuff is very light and easily gets blown
around.

Why not just use the addy that Stan posted? They have it, and it's pretty
cheap.

My wife always goes to craft shops....I have friends who work at auto body
shops....Maybe i'll buy 2 bags and some small bottles fill em 3/4 and sell them
at the sportsmans tag sale at the Moose club fo 5 bucks a bottle call it Handy

Mike,

I've been in the auto body biz for a long time. We personally don't use
the stuff, and i've never heard of it till I read it here. Your friends
might know of it, but I doubt they use it......well I guess they could
be using it, if they deal with a lot of fiber composites.

It's boat building stuff. Used for making epoxy thixotropic. Do a search in
rec.boats.building for info. Finding large batches for little money is a
recurring subject there. For the amounts flyfishers need don't bother
looking for bargains. Also available at West Marine stores in the epoxy
section.

I got a big bag from a local fly shop for $15. They told me it was
"toner." It is "Frog's Fanny". Skinner looked at it and said it was
cabosil. He used to use the stuff when he was building custom planes. I
thought it would last me a lifetime, but I've given alot of it away and
I will have to restock sometime. I think I only got several ounces. A
pound of the stuff must be an enormous quantity. The stuff is VERY light.

I managed to track it down here in Aus. as well. Found it as a "filler"
(this particular item is called Aerosil 200) used in resins at a model
(clay, latex etc) supplier. Apart from filler and colouring agents
there's a foot odor powder that uses it as a component, there was also
some "snake oil" tonic that ...anyway... I did consider using the foot
powder for a few seconds ... something about a combination floatant wader
deodoriser appealed. ;-)

125 grams (I estimate enough to fill a lot (30+) of Frogs Fanny bottles)
cost $10. It looks to be about 1.5 to 2 litres of a very fine light
white powder that has a sort of soapy feel to it.

So what now, a stiffish brush applicator and scrub it into the fly??

(The original Frog's Fanny must be good they're tying flies to imitate
