having tired of reeling in the legions of alosa mediocritus (hickory
shad for the unwashed) in the flatland rivers, i decided i should head
to the mountains for proper devotionals and resurrection of the spirit -
"the passion of the grist".

Wonderful TR, Jeff - well written - and terrific pix on ABPF. Wish I was
there. I just spent two weeks in Oregon and the San Juan Islands in NW
Washington, plus a couple of days on the Olympic Peninsula - and took

SWMBO
instead of a flyrod. It's beautiful country out there, but I think I'm
making progress in convincing her that she owes me one. Gonna plan on
October, fer sure.

It's interesting that of all the people posting on ROFF from all over
the Country (and the world) it seems that people from North Carolina
express the strongest feelings about their home place. I've lived in a
number of States and the only other place I've seen this was in West
Virginia.

willi, as a transplanted native floridian going on ten years of
blue ridge residency..... i can only say that i think it's a
spirit thing.... perhaps bordering on insanity.

when i was a youngin'.... vacationing one summer up here.... dad
drove us up grandfather mountain. i guess i fell in love with the
place then.... marie's and my home is now in the shadow of
grandfather on one of it's many flanks....

i'd be just fine living up here 'till i die..... but i'll
probably have to move down off the mountain to morganton cuz the
commute is a bitch to work.

i guess that will be ok,,,, but not the same. i'll still be in
crow flyin distance of 'ole grandfather and the gorgeous trout
streams that coarse through and around it's ancient granite.

I think you'd get similar responses from eastern Tennessee and western
Virginia. The southern Appalachians evoke the soft curves of a reclining
woman. What better place to spend some time?
