(OK, I put this into the 'snowballs chance in hell' category...) I have an open week in midJune before I need to be in Plymouth, England for grad school. I've made some reservations to get myself into south-central Wales from June 15-20, as there are apparently quite a few very nice trout/greyling/salmon streams there, amongst the headwaters and tributaries of the Why and Usk rivers. I'm planning on renting a car and a small suite at a B&B in a small Welsh (Welch?) town that has a pub, some interesting local culture, some good food, some scenery, and some trout streams. If anyone has a week off, needs/wants to be on this side of the pond, and wants to do some exploring of the region and do some flyfishing, Wales-style, get in touch. It would be fun to have the company. --riverman The last time I looked into trout fishing in the UK I was spending my last year of high school attending seventh form first year at a grammar school in Southampton which was a long, long time ago but from looking at http://www.fishing-in-wales.com I don't think things have changed that much. To fish for trout (a "game" fish as opposed to a "course" fish), either you belong to a Fishing Club or you rent a room in a hotel that has Fishing Rights. Either way you are allowed a specific part of a specific stream (the "beat" system). The Fishing Clubs seemed to have many-year-long waiting lists so the best bet for game fish is a hotel with Fishing Rights. The good thing about England was Public Footpaths which allowed you to wander across the countryside pretty much at will and the bad part was when the footpath followed a great looking stream there was no way you could ever fish. For wandering and fishing at whim in the UK, you must fish sal****er. |

A few quotes from the preface to "moby dick"
ŒThe Indian Sea breedeth the most and the biggest fishes that a among which the Whales and Whirlpooles called Balaene, take up as much in length as four acres or arpens of land.¹ ‹HOLLAND¹S PLINY. ŒIf you should write a fable for little fishes, you would make them speak like great wales.¹ ‹GOLDSMITH TO JOHNSON. ŒThe Spermacetti Whale found by the Nantuckois, is an active, fierce animal, and requires vast address and boldness in the fishermen.¹ ‹THOMAS JEFFERSON¹S WHALE MEMORIAL TO THE FRENCH MINISTER IN 1778. ŒA tenth branch of the king¹s ordinary revenue, said to be grounded on the consideration of his guarding and protecting the seas from pirates and robbers, is the right to royal fish, which are whale and sturgeon. And these, when either thrown ashore or caught near the coast, are the property of the king.¹ ‹BLACKSTONE. ŒIn the free element beneath me swam, Floundered and dived, in play, in chace, in battle, Fishes of every colour, form, and kind; Which language cannot paint, and mariner Had never seen; from dread Leviathan To insect millions peopling every wave: Gather¹d in shoals immense, like floating islands, Led by mysterious instincts through that waste And trackless region, though on every side Assaulted by voracious enemies, Whales, sharks, and monsters, arm¹d in front or jaw, With swords, saws, spiral horns, or hooked fangs.¹ ‹ MONTGOMERY¹S WORLD BEFORE THE FLOOD. The rivers you mention -the Wye and the Usk are really famous. I have only fished the Wye once at a town called Builth a few miles north of Brecon. My fishing at the moment is more or less at a standstill. I shall make some enquiries about the prospect of fishing in these waters. To find Brecon on the map, find Cardiff and follow the A470 North. This road ranges throughout Wales travelling from South to North Wales passing Brecon and Builth. I'll come back to you when I have some information. -- Bill Grey http://www.billboy.co.uk Thanks, Bill. I look forward to hearing more from you. I also hope there's a chance we can meet up and wet a line while I'm there. After my 5-day trip, I'll be in Plymouth for another month, with weekends free. --riverman |

![]() "W. D. Grey" wrote in message ... Also for accommodation try Googling "Accommodation in Brecon, South Wales" There is a huge list of hotels guest houses, self catering cottages etc. -- Bill: I was thinking of this guest house http://www.cammarch.co.uk in Llangamarch Wells. No special reason, except that it seemed off the beaten track, has comfportable accomodations, and offers access to 3 beats (8 pools) for 12 pounds per day. I think, as it participates in the Ulm and Usk passport system, that I would have access to much more water if I stayed there, but in truth I find it hard to understand the Welch system, so I'm not sure. I was going to email them and ask. --riverman |

Fine riverman, you'll know more about the area than I do when you have the answers :-) In the meantime I've picked up a couple of contact references: Mr James Suter of the Gliffaes Hotel, I believe he can fix you up with Usk fishing see: http:/www.gliffaes.com This is situated a bit east of Brecon with magnificent scenery all round. Second contact is for Wye fishing, see: http://www.wyeuskfoundation.org.uk This can provide fishing in the Builth area. Incidentatally, Llangamarch Wells is fairly close to Builth - on the south west approach to Builth. (The A 40 road) Regards, -- Bill Grey http://www.billboy.co.uk |
