A few quotes from the preface to "moby dick"

ŒIf you should write a fable for little fishes, you would
make them speak like great wales.¹ ‹GOLDSMITH TO
JOHNSON.

I've never seen this Goldsmith quote before; in context, it is rather
amusing. In Boswell's words (IIRC): "Poor old Goldsmith".

Eh? I'd be pleased if I'd written anything a quarter as good as "She
stoops to conquer". As Johnson said,

"qui nullum fere scribendi genus non tetigit,
Nullum quem tetigit non ornavit."

I often mutter this to myself after a take on the dry fly before
striking. Maybe this is why I catch so few fish?

IIRC?

If I remember correctly.

Thanks riverman,

Not doubting Goldsmith's talent, just that he was unfortunate to be
continually "dwarfed" by Johnson. The Moby Dick quote from Goldsmith I just
read on this thread is an interesting aspect on this relationship.

"qui nullum fere scribendi genus non tetigit,
Nullum quem tetigit non ornavit."

LOL :-)
