Need help identifying a mayfly

To be honest with you, I am still up in the air about this. The
link that Chas provided was very helpful and according to it wayno
pretty much nailed the ID. I followed the "tutorial" kind of thing
to ID bugs and it spit out Epeorus and Western Quill Gordon. It
wasn't an Epeorus albertae (yellow quill) as wayno suggested, but he
nailed two out of the three (props to uncle wayno!). According to
the site, a March Brown has three tails (one of the traits I was
taught) and so the insect that I took the pic of could not possibly
be a March Brown.

hmm...rhithrogena morrisoni, rhithrogena hageni (western march brown) -
my book says two tails. i thought it was a march brown too...but i
wouldn't know an epeorus from a stenonema.

I am still waiting to hear back from the
entomologist though. I am wondering if I ever will hear back from
him and would understand if I never do, but I still doubt that what
I learned originally is correct. I have received a couple of emails
from people that agreed with wayno and so that is comforting. At
least I have some sort of consensus to fall back on. ;-)

my li'l bug book says epeorus albertae (calls it a slate cream dun) is a
western secondary hatch in faster waters at lower altitudes, occurring
between july and mid-august, emerging at dusk with spinner fall in
mornings and evenings.

While our collection likely doesn't come close to the angling collection at
MSU, I'm putting together a display of some very nice late 19th and early
20th century volumes on the subject. I've found it mandatory to read each
before putting them in the display, just to be sure.

I'll put together a virtual version of the display, including a short
annotated bibliography, and let y'all know when it is up and ready.

you are headed out to Spokane, and I will be in the area -- Post
Falls, ID, at about the same time. Current plans are to be in
ID from about May 16-20 or so, and then we will be heading back
to Butte to fish the Big Hole from the 21 to the 25th, give or
take. Drop me an email if you want to hook up and do some fishing.
