My cousin Alice in Colorado tells me that there hasn't been much
reaction to the prison photos in the states - they were buried on page
23 or something, and most of her neighbours feel that while what was
done wasn't really right, still it serves the dam Irakis right for
bombing the twin towers.

Is she exaggerating?

Is Alice a dittohead?

I said that her neighbours felt this, not that she did.

Well, she must be looking at some pretty strange journalism, because
this has been the biggest story in the US for two weeks.

And Congress won't drop it either. It's getting worse and worse--
apparently, some of this stuff is just SOP-- written into the Rules of
Engagement by Nasty Sanchez. With a stroke of his pen, he does away with
the Geneva Convention. Rumsfeld says this is OK, and not against the
Convention, because they bounced it off Pentagon Lawyers!

Damn-- not even the Nixon Administration did whatever the hell they wanted
to do. These guys don't even make a pretense toward caring what people
think of them.

case in point:
james inhofe's remarks at the 5-11-04 senate armed services hearing;
see if ya'll can stomach this;

"...they're not there for traffic violations........many of them probably
have american blood on their hands......and here we are concerned about the
treatment of those prisoners..."

meanwhile, the american red cross believes that at least 70% of those
prisoners were rounded up in error. this according to this evening's
broadcast of all things considered on npr.

A too common sentiment around here is that the prisoners are all
terrorists and are getting treated better than the people they killed
in the WTC.

Yep, what you're hearing there in your little slice of Georgia sounds
identical to what I'm hearing here in rural Illinois.

(I think Timmmay must be one of them republican elites. ;-)

Not really, although I like the sound of "elite". I just don't fall
[OBROFF] hook, line, and sinker for the media's craze for sensationalized
comments. That goes for the fringe on either side of the issue. What would be in
it for the media if they were to print headlines like "Most People on Both Sides
Agree". How bland is that?!

What I fear is that these sensational headlines are what's being published
abroad for people like our friend Lazarus to judge the American public, and I
don't think they paint a fair picture. I know he said the comment came from a
cousin, but her take may be tainted as well, maybe by talk shows like Rush who
thrive on controversy. Besides, no upstanding Republican would open the gates to
their closed, upscale communities letting the riff-raff in to hear the comments
in the first place. ;-)

Believe what you want, but I live in a very conservative district (we
sent Newt to congress and continue to send any Republican that can win
the primary there since he quit) and that's where my comment came from
- inside the gates as it were.

Media ? I'm not hearing that sentiment from the media. I'm hearing
it from the plumber who fixed my mother-in-law's kitchen faucet the
other day, the roofers who are putting on a roof next door, the guy
who mows the lawn at my mother-in-law's condo and the guys sitting
on the bar stool next to me when I have a beer while waiting on a
couple of fish sandwiches at the American Legion on Friday evenings.
You know, working class guys.

Limbaugh is not what I call "news media", he's entertainment, but
go back and read some of Cal Thomas' recent columns, if you can
stomach it, to get an idea of what's passing for "mainstream
conservative" thought on this issue.

a) Would it be better if they weren't published abroad.

b) What's unfair about the picture?

I'm originally American myself, by the way, though living in London.
