advice on flyrod

Hi,

I'm in this "frustrating" postition, where I have aprox. 700US $ to spend on
a new flyrod. ) I'm looking for a 9 feet #6 weight rod, which I can use
mainly for coastal fishing after seatrout/steelhead here at home in Denmark,
but also for an occational trip for bonefish/small permit. I've been looking
at the Scott S3 and the Sage Xi2 and the Loop Blueline Sal****er. I'd prefer
a 4 piece rod, rather than 3 or 5.

Any experience with these rods, or any comments on other good/suitable rods?
And no. 6 weight is not a typo. )

By the way. As an alternative, I'm ok with buying a blank, and building the
rod myself, if this can save me a lot of $$$. Allthough I have to been able
to try a finished rod first of course. )

Hi Thomas,

After you have selected some rods that you are interested in purchasing like
the 9' #6, 4 piece Sage Xi2 and Scott S3s and possibly a few others, the
only way I know to select the "right" one is for you to cast them all. We
all have a little different casting style so we find different action fit
different people.

Now if you can't do this, I would recommend buying the Xi2 because world
wide, this is the most popular choice of fly fishing guides and salt water
anglers. There are lots of great rods made by Sage, Scott, G.Loomis, T&T and
Winston but Sage is still the most popular in high quality rods especially
in salt water.

Another good reason is that Sage does have one of the fastest warranty turn
around times as well.

Powell Tiboron. The new I is not as fast as the original, but still

does a reasonable job. They are all 4 piece and with the right line/

shoting head they cast like rockets. (I have 8 of them).

The Winston rod you mention is a great rod, probably my favorite rod
ever produced by Winston. The problem is that this person mentions
Steelhead. Although I love the rod, I think it may be a bit soft for
what he's looking for.

I use T&T Rods exclusively. I also own Sage Rods, but have since put
them on the side for what I believe is a better rod. Check out the
T&T Vector series rods.

I definitely agree with the above recommendation to give a Boron IIx a try, if
you've already set the funds aside (you have just enough ;-). If you like a
medium-fast-fast rod you have to at least try one of these out.
They are sweet.

I tested a 9' 5wt 4 piece Boron IIx against my recently repaired but otherwise
vintage Winston IM6 9' 5wt 2 piece (it would be a WT today) a couple of weeks
ago and really enjoyed the new rod enough to order a 9' 4wt 4pc, nickel silver
uplocker with a maple insert. Mmmmmm....Tasty ;-)

A six is easy enough to imagine and I think that'd make for a nice
medium-wind/bigger-water trout rod that *may* even be serviceable against
rather small bonefish, but if you're in an area where anything above 6 pounds
or so roam, you're gonna be underlined and out-gunned, and if you hook a
decent permit I bet you'd be thoroughly beaten.

Erm....I think I'd go with a seven weight instead ;-)

Anyway, the Boron IIx order rate has the factory line backed up three to four
weeks - I *might* have mine in two more weeks but it may be longer. If you are
in a hurry you might have a problem.

In that case, just tell them you know Wayne Knight.

Well. I tried both the Xi2 and the S3S today. Couldnt find a Winston dealer
in Dernmark. I find the S3S much more "fishable" than the Xi2. The Xi2 is
way more stiff and maybe good for a person with a another castingstyle than
mine. The Scott S3S was as if it was made for me. ) I bought the 9 foot
Scott 4pcs S3S #6 and a Waterworks ULA force 3(incl 150y gellspun orvis
35lbs backing) for under 700$ )
