I am guessing - they
have to carry a much wider variety than they used to
and many tyers won't bother purchasing large quantities
of any single hook.


Sounds very reasonable, and is most likely the answer.

They definitely make a tidy profit. I know for a fact that they buy 25
packs of gammagutsi (horribly misspelled) for $1.50 and sell them for
$5.00
