Suit Filed to End All Hunting, Fishing and Trapping

In New Jersey

(Columbus) - Anti-hunters today filed a lawsuit against the New Jersey
Department of Environmental Protection to suspend all hunting, fishing and
trapping.

The U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance Foundation is looking into the merits of the
case to determine what action to pursue.

The case alleges that the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife has
issued sporting licenses to convicted felons. To avoid future instances,
the plaintiffs are asking Judge Susan Reisner of the Superior Court of New
Jersey to suspend all hunting, fishing and trapping licenses until a
background check system for all license buyers is put into place.

"This is the most outrageous and blatant attack on sportsmen's rights that
we have seen in our 25-year history," said Bud Pidgeon, U.S. Sportsmen's
Alliance Foundation president. "To besmirch the reputation of sportsmen by
linking us to felons is unconscionable. Sportsmen are America's greatest
conservationists, paying literally billions each year to fund fish and
wildlife programs across the country."

It is illegal in New Jersey for any convicted felon to possess or purchase a
weapon, Pidgeon said. Criminal background checks would unnecessarily delay
the issuance of a sporting license. The lawsuit even asks that fishing
license purchases require background checks.

The U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance Foundation protects and defends America's
wildlife conservation programs and the pursuits - hunting, fishing and
trapping - that generate the money to pay for them. The U.S. Sportsmen's
Alliance Foundation is responsible for public education, legal defense and
research. Its mission is accomplished through several distinct programs
coordinated to provide the most complete defense capability possible. For
more information about the U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance Foundation and its
work, call (614) 888-4868 or visit its website, www.ussportsmen.org.

I usually buy a multi year license and mine expires at the end of 2004. I may
try to extend it another three years but they maybe puzzled by my request. One
time i read where some biologist was advocating that fishing licenses be issued
by lottery and that was why i thought it was a good idea to buy a multi year
license.
This type of suit may also be a good reason to do it.
I take it that these anti-hunters are also anti-anglers too.

For goodness sake, don't sound so apathetic about it! If something
like this happens in the most densely populated state in the US, how
long do you think it will take for "the Anti's" to target the other
49? Chances are that a good chunk of YOUR state's Wallop-Bureau funds
would end up paying for the resources needed to do investigative
background checks on people applying for fishing/hunting/trapping
licenses where YOU live. If there is one thing that the activists have
going in their favor, it is the fact that many (if not most)
outdoorsmen have a very disimpassioned stance unless something is
going to affect them directly (hence MY passionate outburst).

/RantMode

I hope nothing ever comes of this. *sigh*

Amen Harry.
That previous poster is an example of why as a group we outdoors enthusiasts
are the most ineffective group compared to our numbers of all "special
interest" groups. Joe Z.

Well I guess this means more people are moving to the Poconos!!
You know that place, where you can walk into any WAL MART and buy a
fishing/hunting license and recieve it immediately. You don't even have to
**** in a cup or give them finger prints.

If you think that this case is gonna hold any water your insane, the NJ
govt. gets way too much money from license sales to limit or even delay the
purchase because some asswipe (is that a word?) has a hardon for the
distruction of our constitutional rights.

First I would like to see the pile of cases that they have, pending and old,
where the convicted felon killed his fishing partner with a jig and pig. I
almost took Randy's head off with a buzz bait but I have never been
convicted of anything more than telling fish lies.

It is up to the federal govt. to keep weapon sales limited to the good, law
abiding people of this country, then if a convicted felon wants to throw his
hard earned cash away on a hunting license then so be it. Thats just a few
more trash can liners that we don't have to pay for.

Anyway, It's snowing here and it sucks. I want to fish in a T-shirt.

Good fishing,

Dave V

We can change that ... Please people get involved. I do not live in NJ ...
I do not hunt there nor fish there ... but an animal rights victory there
will embolden them to make attempts elswhere. They are attempting to block
the constitutional amendment in PA right now ... I am sure there is some
level of anti activity in everyone's state ... hell, even in Alaska antis
are campaigning against the Girl Scouts for trapping. IN ALASKA!!
