Please point to the law / section of the Highway Code that outlaws
'undertaking'.

It's acceptable to "undertake" if the traffic stream in your lane is moving
faster than the traffic streams in others.

If the knobs on the Brum section of the M6 want to sit bumper-to-bumper, and
get sunburnt by flashing brakelights that's their choice - me? I prefer
sitting in that "empty tract" of an inside lane at a pleasant 55mph (rather
than an erratic 20 - 65 in the other lanes) until I'm well clear of the West
Mids.

To the original poster: perhaps we need some sort of device that shoots farm
silage from bonnet mounted cannons at anyone on a mobile phone while
driving? Or, a little sticker (or anal cattle prod) reminding drivers that
the use of indicators is mandatory, not optional.

Good idea! We also need something to remind drivers about stopping at red
lights instead of ignoring them!

I've always wondered why the sane majority don't toot their horns at drivers with
mobiles.

If I have got a passenger with me, I ask them to jot down the registration.
Then I report them here http://www.hogline.co.uk/index.asp

I have the number for my local police on my mobile. Website a good idea
though, nice to know there is one. Any idea what happens after you report it
though?

A pocket-size mobile phone jammer would be a useful device. It need not
have much in the way of range, just enough to cover a railway carriage or a
small restaurant. Of course you might have to think up some other job
description for it. . .

Better still a jammer to stop all the cross posting on this group.

Highway Code paragraph 139
"only overtake on the left if the vehicle in front is signalling to
turn right, and there is room to do so
stay in your lane if traffic is moving slowly in queues. If the queue
on your right is moving more slowly than you are, you may pass on the
left
give motorcyclists, cyclists and horse riders at least as much room as
you would a car when overtaking(see Rules 188, 189 and 191"

So unless in slow moving queues or undertaking a vehicle indicating a
right turn the highway code says don't do it. These rules are advisory
however in if an accident was caused by a driver ignoring them he
could be charged with
driving without due care and attention

A lot of things that most people think are law are in fact advisory, what it
says in the Highway Code is often advisory, not law. For example there is
actually no law that says you have to drive on the left, the Highway Code
advises you to do so! However if you are not driving on the left and have
an accident as a result, it would not make much of a defence when prosecuted
for dangerous driving.
