Paragraph 242: Do not overtake on the left or move to a lane on your left to overtake. That's the bit that stops people weaving in and out of traffic overtaking on both sides. However, if you're maintaining a constant speed in the empty left hand lane of a motorway / dual carriageway, moving faster than the traffic in the right hand / middle lanes, then you won't get booked for it. -- Steve H 'You're not a real petrolhead unless you've owned an Alfa Romeo' http://www.italiancar.co.uk - Honda VFR800 - MZ ETZ300 VW Golf GL Cabrio - Alfa 75 TS - Alfa 155 TS Lusso - COSOC KOTL BoTAFOT #87 - BoTAFOF #18 - MRO # - UKRMSBC #7 - Apostle #2 - YTC # |

In article ,
spouted forth into uk.rec.cars.classic... For Newsgroups, Gravity and Free Agent are both known to be good. For email I use PocoMail (which I paid for, but a trivial sum); other contenders include Eudora and the mail component of Mozilla (which of course also does news). Others will have more recommendations (count on it!), I use Agent and PocoMail, both paid for and both worth every penny IMO. Have a look at Mozilla Thunderbird if you want one package for both. I use Thunderbird for Mail, and gravity for Usenet, but only because I was using gravity long before I ousted OE for Thunderbird. -- Carl Robson (The poster formerly known as Skodapilot) http://www.bouncing-czechs.com |

Paragraph 242: Do not overtake on the left or move to a lane on your left to overtake. Have a nice day, Ian Don't forget the rest of that paragraph which allows undertaking in specific conditions: "In congested conditions, where adjacent lanes of traffic are moving at similar speeds, traffic in left-hand lanes may sometimes be moving faster than traffic to the right. In these conditions you may keep up with the traffic in your lane even if this means passing traffic in the lane to your right." Interestingly the use of the magic MUST NOT wording is missing so presumably Para 242 is advisory and not reflecting a legal requirement. As I understand it the offence of nearside overtaking was removed many years ago and currently the offences of careless or worse driving are used. Must go and rummage in the law books to check.
