Default How much tensioin do you put on a pole elastic?

Never having done my own before, I am uncertain as to how much tension
I should put on the elastic.

Pleased advise.

just enough so that it will retract back into the tip easily
biggest mistake people make is not chopping the tip back far enough

Hmmmm...

I just cut back far enough to fit the bush and to let the elastic run
freely.

yes.
1)push the bung in the thick end with the elastic fastened to it, pull the
elastic through the sharp end and mount the bush (oo-er!)

2)pull the elastic so that it's stretched right out, then let it retract
back into shape inside the pole.

3) mark the elastic where it meets the pole and then pull about 9 or 10
inches back through and cut it off.

4) tie on the connector and it should spring back nicely into place after
each stretch.

You may find that in the first few weeks it does stretch and you'll have
three or four inches of loose laccy hanging out of the end of the pole,
simply repeat step 3 BUT a word of warning, don't let go of the cut down
elastic or it will disappear into the pole and you'll have a b*st*rd of a
job to get it back!
*And don't use pole elastic lubricator from tackle shops to aid retraction,
water does the same job without rotting the rubber.*

Its all a question of balance. What size elastic, anticipated quarry (size
of fish), line strength etc etc. You wouldn't want your elastic just
creeping back inside the bush when fishing carp puddles, you need stiff
resistance from the strike. Not a rule of thumb but I have found:-
Too many missed bites then the elastic is too slack
Too many bumped off fish the elastic is too tight

Experiment as posted replies in this thread and you will soon learn to tweak
accordingly. Always start off on the slack side though (for obvious
reasons).

I think I got it right, caught my biggest fish ever on Sunday.
Laccy seemed to extract about the same as a borrowed pole I used
before.
