You can go a lot bigger with bread, especially if you don't let any line
onto the water surface. When fishing really close and holding a big, fresh
carp on the surface the hookhold is under considerable pressure so a bigger
hook with larger wire is less likely to bend and also less likely to cut the
fish's mouth.
