Remember me mentioning the "Mystery Fish"? This is what was happening to me,
except that I was told that gar had rounded teeth and the line would usually
roll right off.

Thank You Ronnie... now I think I know I'm not crazy. Just a gar... just a
gar...

A few casts later out in deeper water something thumped the worm and I set

the
hook. A strong fish pulled for a few seconds then my line went slack.

When I
reeled in it was cut - no fray anywhere , just a smooth cut, like a gar

tooth
cut it or it hit something sharp.

You were told that by a liar. Mudfish (dogfish, grinnel, whatever you want
to call them) have rounded teeth and virtually never bite through line. Gar
can and do bite through it all the time.

Thank You Rich! That would explain alot and save my sanity... a little.

Why was it that no-one else would tell me this, knowing that there are alot
of gar in our lake.

I have had my line cut by many gar - some while I was watching. One tournament
fishing in an old oxbow lake gar were everywhere and my partner kept throwing
spinnerbaits at them. When he lost his last white spinnerbait, he asked me for
one. I told him six of his lost to gar was enough! Gar will definitely cut
your line.

I ran into a school of mudfish up on Champlain last year, they were brutes &
they were breaking my 25# line easily too. Their teeth were definately
sharp.
