Default Pike Mini-Clave

Well, I call it a mini-clave because the notice is short, and I suspect
not many will be able to make it, but anybody interested in pike is
welcome.

When: Sept 5-8, 2004
Whe Sherburne Lake, on the east side of Glacier National Park, MT
Who:
Chas Wade me, obsessed with pike fishing
Andy Wade my son

Tentative:
Glen Wade my other son
Warren Findley famous western clavemeister
John Hightower creator of the cadilac of driftboats

I'll have a large collection of flies and leader stuff, so anyone
unfamiliar with pike can learn. Rods 7-10 wt are appropriate, 8wt is
standard, a strong 5wt can catch fish, but has a hard time casting the
heavy flies. I expect to fish from shore, but the lake should be
draining for irrigation, and might be muddy along the shore making a
belly boat or pontoon in reserve is a good idea.

I'll check out the camping rules, but the Many Glacier campground is my
favorite.

Babb, MT is 6-10 miles away and has a couple motels and a couple
restaurants, cooking your own is probably the best idea.

Bears, black and grizzly, are common here in the spring, I'm not sure
about the fall.

I'll cook chicken and dumplings one night for the crew.

The fish have cooperated often at this lake, when the wind is under
30mph and the snow isn't in the air the fishing can be fast. My
biggest from this lake is 18 pounds. I've broken 12 pounds on each of
8 trips.

I'll post more info as questions arrise.

sounds fun Chas- I've got some kind of a warning bell going off about those
dates but I can't put my finger on it right now. I'll be there if I can-
keep me posted.

I'm hoping you'll be able to quiet those bells over the next few weeks.

Chas:
Where, exactly, is Sherburne Lake?
I live in Browning and haven't heard of it, yet.

I'll have to see if I could make it.

thanks,

George

Right in your back yard, drive north past Babb, turn left towards the
Many Glacier entrance to the park, and you'll drive along it for
several miles just as you enter the park. You probably know Duck Lake
which is also right there at Babb.

Please come, I'd like to meet you.

Oh, ok. I know that one.

There is also another lake, known as Pike lake.
It's up north-west of Babb. Kinda back in the boonies
a bit. Supposed to be real good for northerns.

I'll see what I can do about coming on up. Would be good
to meet you. I'm a beginner fly fisher/fly tier and have always
wanted to catch pike on a fly.
