Bob, sounds to me like your problem might be an undersized and/or
underweighted hook. The hook acts as a keel on a soft jerkbait, and it's very hard to use too much hook on one. For instance, I'll throw a 5" Superfluke with a 5/0 heavy wire hook. A 3/0 hook on this bait is just too small/light. Try beefing up your hook & I think your problem may be solved.
