... How do you attach it though? Suggestion! Wrap the little polystyrene ball on a piece of condom. It makes the bead waterproof. Much better than the old idea of nylon stocking. -- Bill Grey Condoms are too expensive for that. Get a box of latex gloves at the local drug store and use them. You'll have a lifetime supply. I use them for shell-backs on scuds. |

I've read that the trick is to wrap them into a roll, and then slice off pieces, like slicing salami. Doesn't work for me. Anoyne know a good trick that really works? vince |

Once stretched a little, the latex does tend to even out in the width. |

vince Go to your local fabric store and find a roller cutter (looks like a pizza cutter) and the mat that goes with it. Just the small mat will do. Also, look for the clear template/rulers that quilters use. You can get the set up for about 15 bucks. These roller cutters are the perfect thing for cutting latex and any fabric you get. Thing is awesome. Perfectly straight strips as long as your material is long. By the way, have the cute young thang in the store (or Wolfgang), teach you how to use it. They're glad to help. -- Frank Reid Reverse email to reply |

But if our local store doesn't have a cute young thang, Frank, will the little old lady help me? And will that work just as well? vince |

But if our local store doesn't have a cute young thang, Frank, will
the little old lady help me? And will that work just as well? vince Well, I'm finding that most of the ladies at the store, in comparison to me, are young. The little old lady, if not enlightened, will try to get you to use scissors, 'cause thats the way she's always done it. Ask for a quilter to help you, don't know too many that don't use rotary cutters. I found that when I go into a fabric store, the ladies are always very helpful to the chromasonally deficient. Hell, I've seen my wiff use the "poor, defenseless woman" routine enough when she doesn't want to mess up her nails by pumping gas or changing a tire. I have no problems with using the man's version of that gambit in the fabric store. -- Frank Reid Reverse email to reply |

(and I have another type of a fly tying version that uses an exacto blade, a piece of wood, and a glass piece to hold things in position . . .that costs a bit more) Just used the rotary type, Frank mentioned, on some clear plastic strips and a tanned rabbit hide. Did okay for just using a few paper plates as a base, and a ruler. (gotta pay attention) My experiment on a latex glove didn't work as well. (gotta pay attention) Uh . . . remember . . .these things are sharp. Foam cutting is a snap. I also have one of those things that are used for making leather into small strips. (Tandy Leather origin I believe) Works pretty good on rabbit strips (gotta pay attention . . .I use it if in a hurry, otherwise I buy the retail stuff . . . heh . . . heh . . they can afford better "strippers". . . uh . . er . . . never mind) Hmm . . . what was the topic, again? Simplest fly I used on the San Juan in Northern New Mexico in July was a fly on a size 24 hook with just brown thread for the body and a "something" just before the head, snipped half the length of the body. With my travel kit it may have been poly ( or something from the couch where we were staying . . .grin) Actually think I used Dylon or Krystal Flash. DaveMohnsen Denver |
