Warren, who have you gotten pix from? I got CDs from Lou, Charlie, you, Bruce, Mike and Danl. Randy emailed me a few of the pics he had taken too. RW gave me some line about he didn't many pics and basically doesn't have anything for the CD or some such crap. Don't know if Johnny H. has any either. -- Warren (use troutbum_mt(nospam) and earthlink dot net to reply via email) |

God, I hate it when the drive crashes!! Remember the days when we were advised to always back up our disks on the HD? Seems like the word is now to always back up your HD on disk! I still can't figure out why it crashed and that really annoys me. For some reason it said the drive was formatted as RAW and I couldn't access anything on it. This didn't happen because of a virus or anything else that I could identify either. I tried several programs from quite a number of vendors that claimed their product could retrieve lost data from hard drives even if there was some sort of mechanical failure in the HD itself. After about a month of trying a bunch of them, I finally found one that could and I was able to retrieve all of the data from the hard drive. If you ever need such a program, I recommend GetDataBack from http://www.runtime.org/ Well worth the cost ($79) IMHO. Since this last fiasco I am not only backing up everything to another HD, but also to CD. It has kind of been a pain in the ass organizing all of my pics, but I broke them down into categories like 2002, 2003, 2004, Conclaves, etc and then created a sub folder in each with the date that I downloaded the pics or an easily identifiable name (I.e. Western Clave 2004). You can never have too many backups..... -- Warren (use troutbum_mt(nospam) and earthlink dot net to reply via email) |

bill - since you are the expert, what is the difference between a bison
and a buffalo? yellowstone literature states its animals are bison, then gives a leaflet out warning of the dangers of buffalo? jeff William Claspy wrote: I saw the ones on abpf, which prompted me to read Dale Lott's "American Bison: A Natural History." Fascinating beasts, fascinating book. |

Buffalo are impressive animals in any situation but swimming across the river they took on a prehistoric feel for me. I wouldn't mind seeing some high res pictures of those. Bill (for whom, admittedly, it doesn't take much to go looking for books.) That's all I have. Charlie had his camera set at low res, but Danl might have higher res pictures of his. Willi |

No difference other than nomenclature. Buffalo or "plains buffalo" is a common name by which the mammal Bison bison is known. I'll let Professor Lott answer. From the preface of his book: "I've given a lot of thought to whether I should call my protagonist 'bison' or 'buffalo.' My scientist side is drawn to 'bison'. It is scientifically correct and precise. One kind of buffalo is native to Asia and another is native to Africa; none is native to North America. Yet the side of me that grew up American is drawn to 'buffalo'- the name by which most Americans have long known it. I decided to use both names: 'bison', or to be exact 'Bison bison,' places the animal precisely among the world's mammals, while 'buffalo' honors its long, intense, and dramatic relationship with the peoples of North America."
