Time of day and bait for clear water?

For gin clear water I go with all natural colored baits , and usually
downsize. But , if the forage available is 2 or 3" long I will be throwing
a bait around that area. Also if I am fishing off a deep weedline, I am not
afraid to throw a Zara Spook, it seems to get attention from fish in deeper
water (except on boom lake) because it moves a lot of water and makes a lot
of commotion.
To me, and I know some in the group don't agree, scent is more crucial in
clear water than any other time. I have had smallies nose up to a bait
before and not hit it, was it because of scent, texture, color, I don't
know, but I will not take any chances.
Rapala has some really awesome natural colors in almost every series of
baits now, the DT series with the sunfish pattern just dominates in clear
water (where bass seem to feed primarily on blue gill like around here), but
on bodies of water where the primary food is crayfish or shad it is probably
a different story. I am becoming a true believe in match the hatch, but
there are instances where I go against the grain as well , but I am getting
way off topic and will stop here!

I think morning with clear low profile topwaters, with a clear or very
natural jerk bait as a follow up. Then drop shots and/or finnesse worms
later in the day. An occassional natural style crank bait for variety.
Maybe an 1/8 oz spinner bait in green white or grey white colored trailer
with prizmatic willow blades.
