From 1911 to 1959, the issued sniper rifle was the 1911 A3 bolt action,
in 30/06, then the government got smart, because hunting rifles were better for the job Wrong! The 1911 is a handgun, a semi-automatic pistol chambered for the .45 ACP cartridge. The Model 1903 was a bolt-action rifle and after 1906 it was chambered for the .30-06 cartridge. However, the most common type of rifle carried by U.S. troops in The War to End All Wars (That's WWI) was the M-1917 rifle, also chambered in .30-06 and also available in a "sniper" variant. During WWII, some 1903 sniper rifles were used, but so was a sniper variation of the M-1 Garand. -Zimmy |
