Girdle Bug for me -- I have caught one steelhead, numerous trout, whitefish,
smallmouth bass, largemouth bass (okay is was only 1/2 pound, at most),
crappie, bluegill, and a few perch.

By the way, has anybody else every heard of the single fly competition?

Not a single fly. But I remember reading something about what kind of
flys would you put in a survial kit. It may have been here ( or a
discussion on a similar topic).
As I remember it was you get a half dozen flys that would catch any
kind of fish anywhere in the world. The ideal was that wherever your
scramjet was shot down you would have a chance to catch something.

Ken, several fly fishing clubs hold a single fly competition yearly as well
as some major fly fishing competition events (such as the link below).
Adding the, no idea what species you are fishing for or the type of water,
is an idea for my area because we have so many species within a single day's
trip. It certainly would add a bit or challenge to an already established
tradition, wouldn't it?.

OK -
I will bend the rules a bit, let's try one fly (a muddler minnow) in
various sizes - is that legal for a single fly competition?

I have caught all kinds of things on very small (like #12 + 14 - deadly
on trout bent on dries - gunk it up good)) to very large (2/0)
muddlers, well the 2/0 looks less like a muddler than a mass of hair
thing, but the snook loved it!
