First week of June is prime on the Rapid in Maine. See LaCourse for
details.

Amen. Big brookies and land locks salmon are hungry in June, best month

to
fish the Rapid. Scenery is beautiful, river is absolutely beautiful, and

you
can hike your heart out on the Carry Road. If you are there for the
Hendrickson hatch, you will never forget it.

How are the skeeters in June?

Skeeters are never bad. It's the black flies ya hafta fight. But, it's not
too bad. A little bug juice sprayed on your hat and face/neck and you'd be
fine.

When you have a five pound brookie on a 5 weight, an aligator could bite you
and you wouldn't care. d;o)

Reckon that would depend somewhat on just WHERE it bit me. g

Anyway, I find increasingly that the FFing destinations that attract me
anymore are those with wild native fish. Screw stocked fish. Screw
introductions. I regret that--given what happened during the 2001 clave--I
didn't take better advantage of access to those brookies and landlocks,
particularly on all that downstream water.... Would like to get back
sometime before my knees deteriorate to the point I'm limited to fishing
stillwaters from a pram.....

Any time you wish to go up, John, give me a holler. Late May and June are
best, with it tailing off a bit in July. End of July to mid-August isn't very
good, but things begin to pick up after that.

Thanks for the advice, all. I knew I could count on youse guys.

With Yellowstone out of the question due to runoff conditions, I was
leaning towards Graham County, as I've always liked NC. But it is gonna
be hard to pass up an invite from you bookish sorts who'll be at Penn's.
So, what's the scenery like up there?

Er ... uh ... let me rephrase that: In addition to the ROFFian
contingent, what should I expect in the way of wild animals and natural
wonders?

(sung to the tune of "My Favorite Things")
Hailstones on hemlocks and
Bears in your kitchen
Bright blooming nettles and
Wayno is bitchen
Brown paper packages
Filled with Yuenling
These are a few of
The Penns Clavorite things

Coffee colored runoff and
LaCourse in his skivvies
Green drakes and sulphurs
As you crawl from you bivvy
Wild browns that pull
Making your Plueger just sing
These are a few of
The Penns Clavorite things

Girls in brown dresses
Asadi makes passes
Mustads that hook
My nose and eyelashes
Gold and red brookies
That jump from the Springs
These are a few of
The Penns Clavorite things

When the Reid Reids
When the tent floats
When the scotch is sad
I simply remember
My Penns Clavorite things
And then I don't feel so bad.

all things equal...and they aren't...i say yellowstone. it's a no
brainer for me. i love snowbird, but given the choice, for a fishing
trip i'd choose yellowstone every time. if however, you come this way,
let us know and we'll make sure you sample a number of the better spots
the smokies offer.

Howdy,

It looks like SWMBO will be taking the SWMBO'ettes on a high-school
and college graduation trip in early June. The exact dates are not set,
but it looks like I'll have a week to myself to head out on a
fly-fishing excursion.

I've been thinking of either returning to the Yellowstone area to
spend some more time getting to know the smaller rivers/streams around
there. I'm also considering North Carolina, possibly the Snowbird Creek
area. I am giving some consideration to the Yosemite area around
Tuolumne (sp?) Meadows, just because I was struck by its beauty when
SWMBO and I drove through there a couple of years ago (but I've yet to
find a lot of info on what to expect in the way of fishing there).

I'm more interested in scenery/beauty than monster trout, but I'd
like to at least give myself a chance to catch a few decent fish in the
process. I also want areas where I can hike and wade rather than
needing a boat to get to decent water. And if possible, I'd like to
fish mostly dries.

So, given those conditions, what would be your choice for an early
June ff'ing destination in the U.S.?
