Actually, the 'experiment' was rigged. I placed the fly gently into the
water and the butt end popped up and floated the fly Reid-style (duck butt
fashion). If I dropped it from a few inches above the surface, the force
knocked enough air off the bubble so the fly would sink. So, no extra split
shot is needed in the field.

I buy a product from West System, for thickening epoxy resins
used in boat building, that West System calls 407 'collodial silica'

It looks like Frog's Fanny to me. Other fiberglass supply businesses
sell similar products they often refer to as "cabosil"
For ten bucks or so you get about quart.

For 18 bucks I get nearly a gallon sized container.
This may or may not be the specially treated (something about
hydrophobia?)
cabosil others have said was required.

But it works just fine for drying flies. I've been using it for years.

I bought it by phone -- 603-435-7199, a number I got from the web
site Stan posted earlier.

You must phone between 10:30 and 3:30 eastern time, MTWT; no calls on
Friday.

A quart cost me six bucks and change, including S&H.

You might want to try the ts-530 also. Its treated with a different
chemical and is slightly more hydrophobic than the ts-720. Its's a little
denser and so less fluffy so that you lose less every time you open the
container and pull out your brush. I don't know what the difference in
price is.

did you get it wrapped in a plastic bag? mine came packaged that way.
really feels different than frogs fanny to me, but we'll see how it
works on the dry flies.

btw, why don't you and your friend (bob?) fly out to montana for the
july thing this year...i think you'd enjoy fishing with us out there,
and i know we'd enjoy seeing you again. time to branch out from lord
chesterfield counry. g

Seriously, I think it's likely a different substance than what Frog's
Fany uses - seems finer and 'drier'. I've tried it out on various
kinds of dry flies (not in-the-field yet) and it seems to work better
actually - sticks to the fibers better I think. Time will tell, and
I think it was worth the $6 for the experiment. Now if I can find a
cheap source of bottles, I have Christmas presents for all my fishing
buddies.

I'll be sure to bring an empty when we meet on Thursday.

Never fished Montana, but I did quite a bit of fishing in the area
around Estes Park, Colorado, when my wife's parents lived there, years
ago.
