Roger Ohlund. I remember watching that. Fish were not being
cooperative that afternoon, so we all lolled on the river bank,
occasionally taking fruitless turns at displaying all manner of flies
to uncooperative trout.

Until Roger stood up and began casting. It was like watching a freak
show. Of course, a freak show performed by a six foot three chiseled
Odin. Roger threw perfectly formed loops with- easily- one hundred
feet of line out. I felt ashamed of my own casting skills after
watching that display. His rod, Frank's rod, didn't seem to matter.

I think that was the day that he shamed us all into eating salad-
SALAD- with our steak at clave central. Salad at a clave. Who knew?

claspy...were you at the poker game? i sweartagod i can't remember
seeing you that week... of course, my recall of many past events is
quite poor. but, i think most of us were amazed at the pure talent
roger exhibited with a flyrod. i've always admired the beauty of the
casting ability some of our friends here possess, but roger was the
finest flycaster i have ever witnessed. one day, i hope to be able to
see him do it again...i'll even gladly eat the salad.

I do not recall playing poker with anything other than one massively
tripping black bear that week. Stoned and hungry is not a bear you
want to bluff. Besides that, I sort of blend in... and don't say
much... unless you ask me about certain subjects, most of which don't
come up often at claves...

But I'm with Myron: Swedish clave sounds right fine. Some of Roger's
photos and trip reports from his neck of the woods have me packing my
bags each time I read them.

Upper Jumbo exploration comes a close second (with south-of-the-bridge
possibilities filling out the trifecta), but other thoughts on that to
be posted to the "gatherings" thread... after I'm done with the
giblets.

And speaking of giblets (innards of various fowl, for those of you not
accustomed to the annual feast of giving thanks here in the U.S. of
A.) if thanks need be said, how about one or two for fine memories
accrued, posted, kept private or even lost regarding one another from
the nuthouse here?

Ohlund, Olsen, its all Swedish to me. :-d He's also the first person
I've ever met that threw brocolli and califlower on two pieces of
bread and called it a sandwich.
Oh, by the way, I can't remember the motivation behind eating the
salad. Was it to cast like a 6'3" chiseled Odin or look like a 6'3"
chiseled Odin?

You should go up to one of the Swedish Claves and fish with the boyos
up there. Roger isn't even standout....these are guys who have been
flycasting since before they could walk, and do it 200 days a year.
They've been casting flies since they were big enough to walk upright,
and watching these guys cast flies is like a worm watching a human
stand up and walk.

Question, what other brand/model fly rods are on the market that you
would consider really fast? Someone handed me their "fast" T&T that
felt slow as molasses. Looking at the market for Xmas and want to
narrow down the field (though I may just go and get ADG).

Winston 9' 5 wt. LTX is the fastest rode I have. I'm not sure if they offer
that rod anymore?

I like a slow action, it suits my casting style, but there are
times when only a fast action rod will do. The fastest rods I
own are a Sage RPL 9' 5wt and a custom Muskie rod that's a 9'
9wt. The Sage is my go to rod in the wind, a slow action rod
is next to useless for casting hoppers into a wind, and the
muskie rod I use to toss heavy hunks of wet bunny fur which
is likewise uncastable with a slow rod.

As for what's on the market today in the "fast" category, the
fastest I've ever cast was the Sage TCR 9wt. I considered it
when I was in the market for a Muskie rod but I got the custom
rod for about half the price of the Sage.

Powell came out with a rod to compete with Sage's TCR. It's called Edge.
I've cast a 5wt and it was a "fast" rod. Not sure what happened to the
line, but it's on sale at Sierra Trading Post now.

Temple Fork Outfitters have come out with a new, "fast" rod, called
Axiom. Haven't tried one, but heard good reviews so far. I owned a Scott
S3 5wt, which I thought was a bit too fast for a 5wt.....and I like fast
rods. Winston has come out with a rod to compete in the "fast" fly rod
market. Boron MX is what I think it's called. I know there are more
"fast" rods out there, but these are the ones that come to mind right now.

Why - does it cast better under water?

The bar on fast action rods has been raised and passed....

Winston BIImx. Can you say 100' casts with a fishable tip and NO DOUBLE
HAUL?

Puts the Sage Xi2 and anything from Loomis to shame.
