You've already explained it. but explain why the **** I would even wish to pay 5-600 bucks for that thing. Whee! I can read a book on it, and interactively at that. What a great leap forward for literacy in an ever-dumbed-down populace. Just great! It's the latest and greatest ! If you have to ask why you'd want one, you wouldn't want one. -- Ken Fortenberry |

I'm sure there are rebuttals, but it pretty well sums up my thoughts: "Just yesterday I was looking at my iPhone thinking "Hmmm, I wish this thing didn't fit in my pocket and couldn't make phone calls." Then I looked over to my netbook and couldn't help but feel it would benefit from losing the keyboard and being made of 50% glass. Finally apple gives me what I wish." She reads a ton of fiction and loves the convenience. For me, the poblem with one of those is that there are very few academic books available, even fewer older works. From what I've read (admittedly not very much) the Kindle is restricted to a proprietary format (tho I'm sure there are hacks available for the computorially intrepid,) but the Sony Reader is a bit friendlier to varied formats. One of my fellow bums...err...grad students has the Sony jobbie and downloads lots of stuff from Google books and other free sites. Dunno. Maybe someday, but it's gone be a while before I consider buying one of these gizmos. -Dan (Plus, I like to vandalize books. Underlining, starring, etc. is key to the process for me.) |

I've been an Apple user for over 30 years, and I've made a fortune on
Apple stock, but the jury is out on the iPad. It remains to be seen whether consumers feel they need or want such a thing, cool though it is. I'll probably get one on the second or third product cycle. One thing Apple is brilliant at is planning upgrades. BTW, here's an hilarious golden-oldie spoof on Apple's product introductions, the iRack: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-mCCYLC-4xA |

Well, unfortunately not one of us on this forum is a member of the demographic who has any influence on Apple's marketing strategies. We're not SUPPOSED to have a clue about the appeal of iPhones, iPods or IPads. These types of mobile data/communication devices are as comfortable to our kids as TV was to us (and as unfamiliar to our kid's parents as TV was to our parents). --riverman |

Sacrilege! giles who NEVER writes in books.....but dogears thousands of pages to mark passages for future reference. numerous experiments have revealed virtually no clues as to why particular pages are so marked.....but they are left that way in the doubtless vain hope of some future revelation. |

But then, I got to thinking about it (and Ken's burning desire somewhat confirms it) - it really is appropriately named...it's just the thing for drippy ****s...and it certainly ought to, um, dampen the used market... Just what I want - a $600USD cutting board that I can read a cookbook on... Back to the woods with a "sheesh," R PS - What do hockey goalies and Polish women have in common? They both change pads after three periods... |
