How small were the PTs you used?

18's and 16's.

That's the size I tie and use in PTs. When you stated you were fishing small
PTs, I was envisioning Bruiser size PTs.

It's interesting how the fish are more tolerant when a
fly is sunken. The Mayfly hatch was a small 20 and the few fish I took
on top were on 20's and 22's. Started with an 18 but the fish ignored them.

Definitely, although I've found, if they're not taking the match-sized dry,
going to the other extreme with a dry sometimes brings results. For example, if
a #20 Adams "should" be what they're taking but I'm not having success, tying on
a #16 or #14 Royal Wulff or another large attractor sometimes brings results.
Maybe it just ****es 'em off. Also, going with an emergent pattern just
under the surface sometimes works. In any case, early Spring has always been a
bit more difficult for me to figure out than the rest of the seasons.

That's interesting. If find Spring is an excellent time for fishing,
especially in terms of getting into better fish. They're out feeding
avidly and they haven't been fished over much in the last few months.

Maybe our "Spring" starts earlier.
