i think forty has put his finger on the jugular in a post or two within
the last couple weeks. there are simply more bright, literate people that
hang out around here than anywhere else on the web.

part of the beauty of it for me is that some of them have no idea how
marvelous they are.

and the range of political, social, ethnic, cultural, sexual (becky must
be the most forgiving woman on the planet), expression displayed here is not
matched among any society in my experience.

except, possibly, when thomas jefferson and i had dinner together...

None. They all work at Huddle Huts.

I've learned that Peter Charles hates nymphing, even though I have brought him
along nicely into this dark side of fly fishing.

I've learned that you should never let Waldo tie on your fly for you. And, if
he gives you one, check it out very carefully.

I've learned that Jeff Miller has more stamina than any NFL player, and can
stay longer on a stream than anyone on roff. I've also learned that he doesn't
know how to cook an egg, and you should only eat one of his eggs if you are
constipated and need a laxative.

I've learned that Tom Brown is the best friend that *any* man can hope to have.
He can't fish worth a damn, but don't tell him that when he's packin'.

I've learned that wayno would rather fish for little wild trout instead of big
wild trout. He can drive fairly well too.

I've learned that Pamlico Jim Roberts snores louder than Peter Charles and
wayno combined.

I've learned that Tom Littleton is a talented fly tier and a pretty good
fisherman too.

I've learned that Joe Fleischman is a helluva decent man. And I miss his
posts.

I've learned that Wayne Knight don't know **** about fishing with a mouse
pattern.

I've learned that Asadi is not from India, that Frank Church can be trusted
with your woman, and Frank Jr. learned to swim very early in life.

I've learned that Steve Zimmerman, right out of the blocks, makes a helluva
nice grass rod, and is one of the most generous men I've known.

I've learned that Peter Collin also makes a wonderful grass rod and it has
landed some very nice brookies and landlocks. And, he is the best fly
fisherman that I have ever met.

I've learned that despite his roff persona Ken Fortenberry is a nice guy even
though he can be so far to the left that I can hardly see or hear him.

I've learned that just about everyone on roff is a decent person, including our
western brethren. I would fish with any of them. Really!

I've learned from Bruce Hopper that very, very small nymphs are capable of
catching very, very large fish

And, I've learned that no matter how irascible, caustic, cantankerous, and just
plain mean a person is, it is best that you settle your differences with him
before he dies.

How come that always happens. My name, and then the Lord's. Been going
on since high school. "Frank? Oh God." Sorry, I didn't mean to interupt
and bruin your good story...

Yeah.......anyway, as I was saying.........there I was.......and I sez,
"FRANK!"................."Oh God. "

But you never mentioned that gawd awful "coffee" we acquired from that
whatever it was place. That *has* to rate as a ROFF negative.

That was horrible stuff and totally unnecessary as it turned out.
If the time zones in Indiana weren't so screwed up we wouldn't
have been out in the middle of night looking for coffee in rural
Michigan in the first place. We could have slept in and waited
for the Mickey D's to open. ADVICE to guides, when you tell
clients to meet you at 6 a.m. please specify which friggin' 6 a.m.
you're talking about !

I was reminded of that trip when I was in North Carolina last week
because my wading boots froze solid on the front porch overnight
and the last time I had frozen wading boots was when they turned
into ice cubes and fused to the bottom of Dustin's driftboat.

I was giving some thought to just what I'd gotten from a couple years of
fairly frequent visits to roff.

Thought I'd pass on the information.

(1) Encouragement to try a particular Idaho stream that I knew about, and
had seen, but had never fished ... thanks Russell
(2) Ott-Lite(s) ...I had never heard of them until rofft ... we have

three
in the house now ... if you tie, buy one ( if you don't tie, start ...
nothing improves one's fly fishing as much as the information one gains as

a
byproduct of tying )
(3) A modified rod grip that makes it comfortable to hold one's hand much
farther back than the "stock" version ... thanks Mike Connor
(4) Tippet rings ... just starting to experiment with these, but by using
Pitzen knots one can obtain very near 100% tippet strength as well as
several other big advantages ... thanks again Mike

That's it .... off hand I can't remember anything else I've found on roff
that has improved my fly fishing .... what specific things have others
learned here ? ( yeah, about fly fishing )

The six great literary themes are here : Man against God or Fate; Man
against nature, Man against man; Man against woman; Man against society;
and Man against himself.
Well most of them anyway, and the sum of the worlds knowledge on flyfishing.
How much better could it get?

Lots. More than I could type. I've had complete strangers from the
next county over will take you fishing after relocating from several
states away. I've learned useful info about knots, the beauty of
Albolene and the generosity of smallmouth-crazed firemen from Ohio.
ROFF is the best online 'community' I'm aware of.

The ROFFians I've met in person have all been wonderful folks, in
spite of their online personas!
