Doesn't take much effort.

Wolfgang
and that's the long and the short of it.

Hey all,

I usually just buy the prepackaged leaders but was wondering what if
any, are the advantages / disadvantages of "rolling your own" leaders?

TIA,

Buy for dry, make for wet. Saves money and I get what I want.

Now only use FC for dries (usually 9' - 5X) and add a few feet of 7X
FC to ensure a drag free drift. Found this combo to be the magic
solution to taking fish in heavily pounded waters.

For wets, streamers, and steelhead leaders, I make my sections out of
20#, 15#, 10#, and 6# Maxima Ultragreen that I buy on 250 yard spools
for about the same price as one factory FC leader.

Karl Rove has had some luck in that line.....

He may build them, but:
Advantages--

You get exactly what you make

Disadvantages-

Can be time consuming
Nuts can attract garbage
You get exactly what you make

Really? I would have bet that the disturbance in the film would be almost
as important as the refractive index.

As a tag on, the gauge of tippet can really have a factor on nymphs. The
bigger the profile, the more the current can have it's way on a nymph.
When I'm not getting hit on a 6x, I go down to a 7x.
