But it has to be a modern fairy tale if, during Mardi Gras, the Saints
would win.

Oh, good Lordy, don't open that can of worms!

Slowly I turned, step by step...

It is presently Carnival..
Mardi Gras refers to one day, and one day alone, which ends Carnival. The
locals get particular over the difference in terms. *Thus, for the Saints to
win during Mardi Gras, an all-time, not to be broken, record number of OT
periods would have to be played.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *Tom

Soooooo * sooooorrrrrrryyyyyyy.

Well, **** you....

Not being any sort of coon-ass

What kind of ass are you...? *

FWIW, many New Orleanians aren't fond of the term - me, hell, I'm big and easy -
make it light on yerself, but really, I'm not a "coon-ass," but I'm not going to
fight over it if calling me that floats yer boat...others, OTOH...

I am not steeped in the local lore,
and deeply regret any wish for the residents of the Queen City to have
any but the minimal enjoyment out of life

Ah...**** you...part deux...

Seriously, though, "Carnival" is the "season," whereas "Mardi Gras" is a
specific day - "Fat Tuesday" (and "Lundi Gras" is the Monday preceding "Mardi
Gras" - but that's a whole 'nuther topic...). *It's not really being "picky" as
there really is, at least locally, a big difference. *For example, if you ask
many here "what are you doing for 'Mardi Gras,' they'll tell you what they are
doing that specific day/Tuesday - Rex and Zulu roll on Mardi Gras, but Bacchus
rolls the last weekend of Carnival...and down here, it's not "kar-ne-VALL," it's
"CAR-nah-vul."

cheers

Right back at ya!

oz, wondering if the locals bitch about terminology while they take
your money

Naw, we'll just whip yer ass if you get all pompous and surly - IOW, if you act
like a ****ing-Yankee-carpetbagger-asshole-tourist - otherwise, feel free to
think yourself as important as you are willing to pay for...or better yet, just
walk on up, introduce yerself like a gentleperson, and have a cocktail or 8...we
gots plenty and we're always willing to share with friends, both old and new...

YFCAC,
R

.....and that, dear friends, illustrates why I go to Mobile for my "pre-
Lent" celebration.

cheers

And THAT is why we don't like ****ing-Yankee-carpetbagger-asshole-tourists...ah,
well, a girl has to know her limitations, I suppose...or is it that you prefer
to get yer ****ing-Yankee-carpetbagger-asshole-tourist ass whipped by 'Bama
boys...?

I know plenty of folks in and from Mobile and they use the same terms. Think of
it like this - if you were asked, on Nov. 1st, what you were doing on Christmas
Eve, would you think the questioner was asking what you were doing during the
entire "holiday" season, from Thanksgiving to New Years Day (for those in the
US)? And since Mobile (like New Orleans and the MS Gulf Coast as well as other
areas) has parades, balls, parties, etc. during about a 4 week period (and a
little longer for Krewe members, etc.), "Mardi Gras" really isn't any more
accurate when used to describe the "season" there than it is in New Orleans.

HTH,

goshsakes....
