Think of it like this - if you were asked, on Nov. 1st, what you were doing on Christmas Eve, would you think the questioner was asking what you were doing during the entire "holiday" season, from Thanksgiving to New Years Day (for those in the US)? And since Mobile (like New Orleans and the MS Gulf Coast as well as other areas) has parades, balls, parties, etc. during about a 4 week period (and a little longer for Krewe members, etc.), "Mardi Gras" really isn't any more accurate when used to describe the "season" there than it is in New Orleans.
