BTW, you should be hitting the Lake Erie tribs for lake-run

I would, but my next available free time is gonna be taken up with a trip to
the Nittany Mountains to fish with a rag tag bunch o' dogmatic fear
mongerers. On my own dime, of course. :-)

How's the weekend after this one? I don't need to be the xth person to
mention how crappy the weather has been here (though that won't stop
me). There are times when the river is alive with bug activity and
plenty of heads up. I'd wager that this year on early June being
optimal for dry fly fishing ... I am also watching the flats for the
big stripers. A fisherman neighbor of ours on the Cape says the squid
fishing is phenomenal -- a really good sign that the big stripers will
be in to feast. Should bode very well for inshore boat fisherman
('tripper?). I have skipped the schoolie-fest in anticipation for good
flats fishing for keepers+.

But fear sells. Hell, it's been the major thrust of most
presidential campaigns that I've witnessed firsthand.

It's interesting that in the recent UK election the reverse was true.
Terrorism was 14/15 in voters' priorities. Howeever it was still a
forgettable opposition that ensured Phony Tony, the Vicar of St Albion,
got back in.

So why should millions of
dollars be spent on a whim of one or two scientists deciding a
subgroup is important, without going through a peer-reviewed
process?

And why should a threathened subgroup face increased pressure without
the same peer-reviewed process?

No, this is a logical fallacy, I'm sure there's a name for it but
all I know is this is equivalent to asserting something and then when
challenged saying "well prove me wrong". It's up to the asserter to
back up their statement.

I see what you're saying, but I would think that any big project likely to
hurt any animal population, threatened or not, particularly on a freshwater
stream, would have to come up with some sort of environmental impact
statement at some point. Thus, it is subject to review. Often, public
input is sought in such cases, and is sometimes required.

Now, with respect to "two or three scientists" making a decision, keep in
mind that published work is peer reviewed. Of course, a reviewer may
disagree with any paper, even one that gets recommended for publication,
but usually the review process results in substantial representation of
contrary opinions in any given paper. Published work should not be tossed
out of consideration willy nilly.

Wait - let me weigh the options: no fishing or spouse induced pain, no
fishing or spouse induced pain. . . think I'll go with the no fishing
option (that's my 30th wedding anniversary weekend.)

I'll take this to email (as opposed to the NC Ping System) so we can
hopefully work out something.

Let's answer that question with another question:

Do you have any knowledge, save the NY Times article, about Drew Hall or
this memo?

Only what you wrote in your previous post. (And it's *Dale* Hall.)

So, you assume it's true (or at least accurately informative) because
it's the NYT? (And I corrected the name error, but thanks.)

But this certainly makes me want to find out more about the man.

I'd suggest doing not only that, but on the situation itself, before
forming any opinions of the NYT article.

and another:

Do you have any knowledge, save the NY Times article, about Drew Hall or
this memo, that indicates that the memo actually requires anyone,
scientists or even sensible people, to do any ignoring of anything, or
even that it requires anyone to do anything specific?

Did you even read the article?

Yes.

Or are you just assuming that because it was written by a "left-leaning rag" that
it is automatically biased?

The NYT isn't a "rag," but generally, much of its personnel tend toward
a (personal) left leaning that is often reflected in reporting biased in
that direction. Sure, it often takes itself and its importance a wee
bit too seriously, but fair's fair and it is an important newspaper
(...heck, think of the fish that would go unwrapped...). This story is
an example of that left slant. And while you're learning about the
story and the players, you might want to get a little background on
"Fallacy" Barringer, too - if for no other reason than for humor's sake
- try searching using her name and "matt drudge," "liz smith," and
"harpers sirica" (three separate searches).

And wayno, if you're reading this and seek any info on ol' Felicity,
turn off the graphics beforehand - if Greta Van Susteren turns your
stomach, Ms. Barringer will do things to you a 55-gallon drum of the
lil' blue wonders can't fix...

The fight to preserve something resembling biodiversity on Earth is a
rear-guard action. We're going to lose millions of species in the next
century regardless. With pigs like you on the planet every effort that
MIGHT result in saving a single species is worth the trouble.
