Bill, not sure if I should be the one answer this, but from what I've read,
and spoke with a few local experts on bamboo rods. When you get up in length
you also get up in the actual weight of the rod.
I was surprised to pick up a 7 1/2 4wt vs. a 8 1/2 6wt, there's a great
amount of weight difference. There is also a huge difference between the 7
1/2 4wt bamboo rod vs. a 9' 5wt carbon fiber rod.
Most of the experts I've talked with on cane rods told me the same, stay
under 8'. And most agreed 7.5- 7.9 4wt -5wt do cast the best.
It's on my mind and I'm very close to dishing out the bucks for a new
Winston 7 1/2 4wt 3pc with two tips since they're not being made anymore.
Welcome and open to suggestions.

The problem with bamboo rods over 8 feet long is the heft. Nine feet is
definitely too long. Any rod I have fished with that long wore me out
by the end of the day. I do have three different 8 1/2 footers that I
like a lot and have fished with a great deal - a 5 weight, a 6/7 weight,
and an 8 weight. The eight weight has a butt extention that helps
balance it. Using a heavier reel to balance the rod will also help with
casting fatigue. I am a fan of Hardy Perfects, so this is a plus!

I'll be bringing a healthy appetite and a bucket of bonhomie.

Would that be the 12-year-old Bonhomie or the 15 YO? g

Well, I'm definitely post-pubescent.....um.....well, o.k., I THINK so,

wolfgang said you had rods and rigs enough to outfit all of us, that you
shared fine whisky, and told excellent campfire stories... i can't
imagine what else we'd need. but, what will you be needing?

Yup. Saw those myself and was damned impressed. Damn near inspired to
try my hand at it; but fortunately (or unfortunately), opportunity and
inspiration never coincided. As long as I can play the "been gone for a
while" card, where/how the hell *is* Zimbo?

I lurk from time to time, but hardly ever fly fish anymore so don't feel
particulary qualified to post

bull****. i have fished with the three best small stream fishermen i
have ever seen, and you are right in there with them. you learned more,
more quickly, than anyone i have ever seen.

but you are, admittedly, a dismal failure at a single malt party.

I fly fished about three times per week this summer (spent two months in
Utah) but have only been once or twice since returning to the GONS. My hobby
time since then has been spent running (two marathons) and now cycling
(about 220 miles per week). But that's admittedly a pretty poor excuse.

But... Wayno and I are scheduled to hit the stream next week, so things are
looking up.

then you've flyfished on average more than most hereabouts, i'd guess.
as with joe mcintosh, i'm nearly always amazed and in awe of your varied
skills and ability. last i heard you were racing street cars at some
track, now marathons/cycling. are you doing the iron man stuff yet?

go easy on old wayno... not sure he's ready for a buffed zimbo on the
stream. good to hear from you and to know you are well. hope to see you
again one of these years... perhaps sometime you and wayno will come
east for some bass, puppy drum, or sal****er sport.

I recently have been researching the traditional Bamboo (cane) rods. I'm
very much interested in the history, construction, casting techniques and
the craftsmanship of these rods. I noticed there are quite a few good
builders as well as newcomers to the art. I also read, and I'm sure it's
old news to most here that the Bamboo team of Glenn Brackett, Jeff Walker
and Jerry Kustich left R.L. Winston in October last year. I haven't heard
on the impact that would have on Winston, but I'm sure it didn't suit well
with the purist.

Any traditionalist out there fly-fishing with the cane rod?

You might find this link interesting. There was a series of shows on TV
about how to build cane rods.
