When putting on line it goes on uneven so when I have finished one end is
higher than the other. Apparently this is a problem with all the old 7000's
but does anyone know the cure for it if there is one?

Personally I'd remove the level wind (replacing it with a cage support
bar, obtainable from several sources) and wind the line on manually.

If you insist on a level wind it's worth stripping down the reel, if
you feel confident enough, and giving it a thorough clean, as
sometimes the level wind sticks due to the presence of sand particles
in the scroll bar, but I'm afraid once that has happened, unless it's
attended to immediately the sand acts like grinding paste and a
service will be needed, with the worn parts replaced.

Cheers

There is a pawl inside the level wind mech that wears out over the years.
This will cause the level wind to run unevenly, and hence uneven line layout
on spool.
Suggest you replace this pawl - 5 minute job !.
