The beauty of my business trips is they tend to lead me right by fly
fishing shops on my way to visit clients. Go figure. Most of the time the shops turn out to be nothing much in the way of an experience, but I had a lot of fun in one today. After visiting two Orvis-authorized stores that had little to offer (just a corner of the stores dedicated to fly fishing, one store with only two rods), I located The Fly Fisherman in Orlando. This is a well-stocked store with lots of selection, and a tyers corner where the proprietor shared his skill of steelhead flies (he's going to WA new week), and we talked for a while about the different types of fishing we experience. I spent about an hour in the store altogether and enjoyed my stay. I'd recommend this as a stop to anyone from roff on a trip down this way. http://www.flyfishermaninc.com Sometime in the next few days I hope to make it to Bass Pro Shops. -- TL, Tim ------------------------ http://css.sbcma.com/timj |

There's also a sister store on the Atlantic coast. I've not been in there in several years but the one fly fishing purchase I've always wish I had made was in the shop. They had a four piece T&T Heritage 5 wt that I passed on and have never seen another either in a shop nor on Ebay. I was a novice fly fisher at the time and the owner helped me get some casting kinks out of the way when using big flies as I was going SW fly fishing the next day. (weather wiped out those plans) Sometime in the next few days I hope to make it to Bass Pro Shops. I thought you were doing a tour of flyshops? If you have time, you ought to look up John Kumiski, he's a former teacher and a great guide out of the Orlando area. He runs folks down the no motor area near Canveral and guides folks out of a canoe. Baby tarpon, snook, redfish and watching the manistees. |

Well, I *AM* near Fantasy Land. g I've never been to a Bass Pro shop, so I owe it to myself to experience the thrill. AFAICT, there aren't any other shops to visit in the Orlando area, but I will entertain suggestions. I'm not in the market for a guide, but appreciate the suggestion. Also, I may find myself in the St. Pete/Tampa Bay area in the next few days. Any suggestions on "toy stores" in that area? -- TL, Tim ------------------------ http://css.sbcma.com/timj |

From a fly shop, sorry not too familiar with Tampa/St. Pete but a good friend just moved down there from Michigan. Immediately bought three boats and his tackle selection is at least twice what I own, do you want his number ? Maybe he'll show you the stash. g |
