Illinois . . . we'll have to take my champion out some time this year. Have
you ever fished the Fox north of Elgin and I90? I've passed over it many
times and it looks great , but have never fished it. Notice a small ramp
under the I90 bridge.

I would enjoy that, Josh.

No, I have never fished that area north of I-90 is unfamiliar to me. There
is a small Forest Preserve right there. The entrance is south off Rt. 31
into the "used to be" shopping center and follow it around. I drove down
there a few times on my way to Elgin just to look . Only saw three rigs
parked at any one time, a few bank fisherman bottom fishing but that was it.
I never got a chance to talk to the "forest ranger" about the fishing in
that area. He was never in. The ramp is small and some of the water is
shallow. I have heard of Bass, Pike and Muskie in that area right by the
I-90 bridge.

I usually go to the Elgin Dam at Kinball St.when I go "South." Bass and
Walleye from Walton Island just below the Dam. I just hope they take down
all that temporary fencing so I can get to a few good spots this year.
Caught some bass from the south east end of the far south Island last year.
Saw I guy pull 13 Walleye out of that water on live worm harnesses once a
couple of years ago. I'll have to try that myself. As a kid Kimball St. Dam
was full of Cats and Bullhead I learned a lot about bottom fishing back
then. I met a lot of "older" fishermen who gave out advice and assistance
freely back then. I grew up about 6 blocks from that Dam. Biggest thing I
ever caught back then was a 24 pound carp. For an nine year old that was a
great thrill on the gear that I had in the fifties. 5 ft metal baitcaster
with a three dollar reel, Dacron 12 lb test line, long shank hook with Green
Giant corn. The fish about pulled me in.

Good fishing in the meantime to you.

Hate to bust in...but I had the occasion to fish the Fox near West Dundee
( I think) last year. We threw curly tails and caught a dozen or so
smallies. Nothing bigger than a pound or so, but a lot of fun. We waded on.
The river wasn't deep enough to float a very big boat where we were. In lots
of places I guess it is plenty deep, just not where I was. RichG

p.s. I spend Winters in TX, and Summers right at the border of Wisc. and IL
( Lake Geneva) RG

Hi RG,

I have a friend who lives on the river in W. Dundee just south of Rt.72 the
water is about 3ft at the deepest channel. The rest of the water is too
skinny to put a boat in. He likes to fish for snappers. Has a ton of shells
from the ones he's caught over the years. His largest shell is 23 inches
front to back. I never had turtle - hope I never will. But he likes it.

I'm in crowded Crystal Lake.

I figured... nice river now... I remember canoeing it in the 70's and it was
in pretty bad shape (there is a scout camp near Yorkville we used to go to).

It is starting to look like there may be enough of us out here in the
Fox Valley to have a mini outing of our own.

If only the weather will warm up (I don't do "hard water").
