I drive north today to a favorite spot hoping for a couple silvers and
maybe some dolly varden. The sun was out full, the air was cool, the North Cascades were freshly snow capped, and I was fishing. How could it get any better? In about 200 yards of the river I managed: 6 or 8 silvers, none fresh enough to keep, but hard fighters still. 3 whitefish snuck in for some exercise. 1 chum had to sample my single egg 3 dolly varden, the biggest 23 inches and fat 1 steelhead, my first of the winter run. The steelhead was an odd fish. A hatchery male 19 inches long. He fought hard, jumped about 6 times, and I released him as thanks for the ride. Anybody ever catch more than 4 anadromous species in one day? The whitefish is a resident, he didn't count. I've never fished for anadromous species unless you count Lake Michigan steelhead (isn't there a -dromous word that describes fresh water lake to fresh water stream ?), but I've caught browns, rainbows, brookies and cutthroat all in one afternoon and all on the same stream. In Yellowstone, just below Gardiner off the incinerator road. (Unless you're a know-it-all from North Carolina in which case the incinerator road is located *above* Gardiner. ;-) -- Ken Fortenberry |

![]() Ken isn't there a -dromous word that describes fresh water lake to Ken fresh water stream? Maybe 'lacustrine' or 'adfluvial'? http://www.nwfsc.noaa.gov/publicatio...7/Glossary.htm -- Jarmo Hurri Commercial email countermeasures included in header email address. The word I couldn't come up with is potadromous. Thanks for reminding me of that word. I'd count that all the same. I was mostly wondering if there are ever more than 4 species of anadromous fish in a river at one time. I can't think of an example if you reject the non-sport fish like lamprey and smelt.
