Fluorocarbon leader

This stuff is damned expensive, is it worth it, i tried a leader on the last
day of Loch Lomond this year and i did like the way it sinks with no 'mud'
needed, if i am to buy some how long does it last, i usually buy Maxima and
throw it out after two seasons (or longer frequently but one day a big fish
will break me - I should be so lucky) Any thoughts out there on this
quietest of NGs at the moment.

Hi Ed. I don't have the answer to your leader question but thought I'd reply
since you fish Loch Lomond. I'm local to the area and had a very successful
season on the River Leven, and was thinking of getting the 'big ticket' next
year to get onto the loch as well.
I just wondered how you thought the season went on the loch, and what
methods were catching fish?

It's a lot cheaper if you buy 100m or longer spools marketed at Carp
anglers!

I quite like the stuff - a 3 foot tippet of 4lb Fluoro attached to a
floating tapered leader won't sink a dry fly but will sink slightly so it's
probably invisible.

On a salmon trip to Scotland in September I used 4ft of 14lb Fluoro on the
end of my reel line and tied the spinner onto the Fluoro, not only could you
quite clearly see nylon in the water, you could equally not see the Fluoro -
I was the only person on the beat who caught fish (except the Ghillie!) all
week. Maybe it was the Fluoro.

I'm a convert to Fluoro, but not to the silly prices charged for 25m spools
aimed at game anglers.

Hi Tom

Nice to hear you had a good season, it seems it was a great season for
salmon throughout the country, I would say the sea trout didn't feature too
much on our radar. I' m not generally a loch Lomond man however I was taken
out on the last day of the season which was a great day out and we put
ashore with a lot of the regulars and the concensus was the loch hasn't done
well in years, It's still a lovely day out. I primarily fish the Endrick and
that did well though the start of the system was the Fruin I hear. Still, on
the last Tuesday of the season I caught 3 salmon on fly, sadly I had only
two days on the river all season, I just couldn't get away from work when it
was wet, next year I hope to change things.

Haven't fished the Leven for ages, I must give it a crack next season.

Good luck for 2005.

PS, I think the ticket is well worth it, the different rivers make for
variety.

Saw your salmon, very nice too, my 3 were red kippers and not worth taking,
I did miss my favourite meal - A 2lb sea trout, nicest thing on a plate!
