What do you all think about the importance of using "high" end
equiptment? What percentages would you each place on equiptment verses technique? If you and I were equally competent as to our bass fishing skills, fishing out of the same boat, and I used a Little HSX 40 Quantum rod with a little IC 20 Quantum reel, and you had the best rod and reel money could buy (based on your choice)...what percentage of advantage would you feel you had over me? We are fishing the same baits in the same water at the same time. The fishing is compatible for my set up...no heavy weeds to pull em out of, etc. So, I am just curious as to the individual "weighing" of the importance of high tech equiptment (high priced) grin. All other things being equal...what percentage of advantage do you think you could gain over me in equiptment only? JK |

But I would say conservatively that all things being equal, I would have at minimum, a 20% advantage over you. -- Steve @ OutdoorFrontiers http://www.outdoorfrontiers.com G & S Guide Service and Custom Rods http://www.herefishyfishy.com |

A 20% advantage indeed the first year Steve, a 25% advantage the second
year, and so on... Eventually John, if you fish hard & your equiptment takes an appropriate beating, your cheapo rig is gonnna let you down, generally at the worst possiblle moment. I'm not saying go buy $300 rods & the new $500 Shimano reels. You're crazy if you do (no offense to the filthy rich of course). Most of my combos retail at about $300-$450, and have never let me down. I've got Team Daiwa reels that are now 8 years old. They work as good as day 1, even if they look like h-ll lol. i think the advantage would be different depending on the type of lure/bait
used. if we were using spinnerbaits, and assuming you could cast accurately, not much difference. however if we were dropshotting in cold water with inactive bass that only mouthed the lure on the drop, i think you would be at a tremendous disadvantage. but i think the skill factor is much more important than the tackle, just like equipment in any other sport. i am sure tiger woods could use the cheapest walmart clubs made and kick my butt golfing if i had the best clubs money could buy. however the better you get at anything the better equipment you usually want, whether you need it or not. crownliner "John Kerr" wrote in message ... What if you were casting those spinnerbaits into a stiff wind? I'll bet I'd
cover twice the water than John would in a day of fishing... My casts would be longer, and I'd make a lot more of them. Equally competent? 10, maybe 15%. But as the old cliche goes, it ain't
the equipment. I could play Larry Bird in horse using a brand new Wilson and him a half rotten pumpkin, and he'd beat me. Save your money, work on your skills. ![]() |

By making up conditions that "even the playing field" you are negating some of the advantages that high end gear might bring to the table. In your imaginary world, there might be no difference. But in the real fishing world, is tha the case? Not sure about you, but I prefer fishing in the real world, for real fish. Joking aside, your line... If you and I were equally competent as to our bass fishing skills, is where the problem is. Most really skilled anglers I know prefer good gear. Some obsess about it. Rare is the guy in that skill level who doesn't care enough to use the best that his circumstance will allow. My kid is an exception. As far as I'm concerned, he's one of the best anglers I've ever been in a boat with. He can (and regularly did, when he was a teenager and used to accompany me on trips) outfish a lot of big name guys. The collection of tackle he had assembled over the years was a hodge-podge of the best he could afford at various points in time (including some pretty lean times) and stuff that had been given to him by well meaning, but non-fishing in-laws. He never disposed of any of it, and continued to use it and catch fish with the best of 'em on it, until last year, when all of it was stolen from his trailer. RichZ© www.richz.com/fishing |

I certainly wasn't arguing the merits of "cheap" equiptment...I have
some of the best at my disposal. I just often wonder where we cross the line in technology, at what point does it become so slight of an advantage as to be insignificant for the extra dollar? I agree about the advantages cited in my example...except I am not sure anyone will cover "twice" the water I do if we are fishing from the same boat ![]() JK |

![]() "John Kerr" wrote in message ... What do you all think about the importance of using "high" end equiptment? BIG SNIP As somebody once said, "I can't afford to buy cheap equipment." That's probably not a direct quote, but you get the point. I may be able to fish just as well, or almost as well with cheap equipment, but it will cost me more in the long run as I replace it every other year. I bought my first Shimano reel 18 years ago. It was top of the line at the time and it is still in excellent working condition. I am also ashamed to admit that I rarely ever serviced it. It's probably been broken down, cleaned and lubed two or three times in all those years, and I have used it a lot. I am much better about taking care of my equipment now, but that goes to show the "advantage" of quality. Quality gear also feels better and casts better, and that helps your fishing, IMHO. K |

Ive got to agree that it's around 20%. At times a cast that's 20 feet
farther or a rod that is more sensitive is a big advantage, under other other conditions there's almost no advantage at all |
